Canada is becoming a major exporter of narcotics to Japan, according to an RCMP intelligence report, and this country's links with Colombian drug cartels are multiplying.

The national force's "Drug Situation in Canada" report for 2004 says Canada now ranks second as a source of methamphetamine seized in Japan (44 kilograms), after having no real presence there only two years ago.

It also placed third in ecstasy shipments discovered, with 50,000 tablets, and accounted for 10 per cent of all marijuana seized (60 kg).

"Because of the large amount of marijuana from Canada in 2004 and the fact that couriers are Canadian and Japanese, Japanese authorities believe criminal syndicates are involved," reads the report, completed in September.

Authorities believe organized crime groups in both countries are working together to create "a supply and demand relationship" in Japan.

Compared with the amount of cocaine moving between Canada and Colombia, however, the numbers in Asia appear miniscule.

"Major operations concluded in 2004 brought to light relationships between Canadian organized crime elements and Colombian cartels, and conspiracies to import multi-hundred kilogram shipments of cocaine to Canada on a regular basis," the report says.

While Caribbean islands such as Trinidad, Haiti and Jamaica are the most common transit points, the amount of cocaine seized at the land border entering British Columbia doubled last year.

Most of the seizures are made on small, private sailboats, however, including one 542-kilogram shipment stopped in Nova Scotia, and another 750-kilogram stash destined for Canada that was intercepted off the coast of Puerto Rico.

"In general, traffickers try to unload their shipments in isolated areas along the Canadian coast in order to avoid inspection at ports of entry," the report says.

Marijuana production "continues to tax" law-enforcement resources across the country, the RCMP points out, citing the more than 1.5-million plants and 33,000 kilograms in bulk pot seized coast to coast.

The plant total is the highest recorded in the report's statistics, which go back 10 years.

The RCMP says "ethnic barriers" continue to fall in the marijuana industry, as more groups find it useful to work together to "ensure the success of the conspiracy."

The Mounties also address the issue of drug trafficking and terrorism, saying there is no evidence the two are linked in Canada.

"It is important to note that tracking the ultimate destination of proceeds of crime is a challenge no matter what the nature of the investigation," the report adds. "For this reason, we cannot fully discount the possibility that some portion of drug trafficking proceeds generated in Canada supports terrorist activity."

I never knew Japan had that large of a drug culture, anyone live there and have anything to say about it? Always had an intrest in the country and psychoactives so the both together coudnt be bad.

Whoa… whoa… not cool!

We need that shit in the US! Bring it to the US! Japan doesn't want it. They are so damn close to the Golden Triangle they shouldn't have any problems getting the really cheap stuff. Sigh…

Peace.

(I also find a Japanese drug culture intresting becouse drugs seem to be a larger taboo there then any other 1st world country; there society seems to rely shun them more then others. Im glad that it seems to have at least a recognizable group there as Im sure the creativity and the relaxation of use rely brings something amazing to there work oreinted lifes)

they may be close to the golden triangle, but the golden triangle is only good for heroin, maybe a little meth but not that much yet. Japan has over a million meth heads (the drug was manufactured and sold legally in the world war two years under the name 'Hiropon') who are supplied by the infamous 'Yakuza'.

Most RCs are still legal in Japan but illegal drugs are very expensive. I once saw someone hand over 20,000 yen for a single tab of acid! I myself have bought acid for 1500 yen so it is possible to get it cheaply, but you gotta speak the language and know the right peeps. Most Japanese people don't know very much about drugs, except that they are bad.

The goverment often put on scare campaigns to warn people of the dangers of 'Kakuseizai' (Stimulants, namely meth) and most people consider any drug except maybe marijuana to be classed as 'kakuseizai'. There is a famous slogan which translates roughly to 'Do you choose to quit Speed, or quit life?'. Kind of like the 'Speed kills' shit back in the '70s.

Drugs, drug users and anything to do with drugs simply doesn't come up in conversation in Japan, and because of their taboo nature, the people who do choose to take drugs are much deeper underground than they are in the West. Japanese drug user are usually really cool people, some of the hard-core meth heads can be a bit intimidating tho. Thats the other thing to remember when entering the drug world in Japan, 99% of the market is already controlled by someone, someone who won't appreciate you on their turf.

From my experience in Australia anyway, if somebody rocks up to a club with 50 pills on them to sell, if they do it discreetly, no-one will tell them to fuck off, it's first in best dressed so to speak. In japan however, gangs run most the action and if word gets out someone new is around, you'll be sorted out v. quickly. This is the other thing to remember too when in Japan, I found the gang presence at raves/doofs/clubs to be much more prominent than in Australia. I can't even think of a seeing a fight at a party in Australia, but nearly every big party I went to in Japan had a gang related fight incident of some degree.

The smaller roots parties are still great tho, but to keep them fun the organisers are very selective about releasing the details to people. I once went to a doof where you had to be on a special list to get the directions to the party site. I didnt like the idea at the time, thinking it was a bit elitist, but i saw what happened once when gate crashers rocked up to a doof in the middle of the mountains with no police or security, it was pretty scary stuff, so i am glad that some parties are kept top secret.

The over-achieving business-pro nature of Japanese culture would IMO make it a prime market for meth out of all drugs.

Meth was first synthesized in Japan in 1918 if I'm not mistaken. Which is kind of interesting.

UN… I was under the impression a HUGE volume of amphetamine, not meth in particular, came out of the Golden Triangle. Heroin might be their main dig but Burma makes a shit ton of speed. I was refering to drugs in general not weed or esctasy. However when I write posts like that last one there is no way to know that. Peace.

It's there.

Marijuana in Japan? Not really. More like hash. Extremely expensive though, what is $10 here is upwards $60 there. Not the big drug there as it is in America. There were a few guys in Japan wearing "Marihuana" shirts casually in public though; probably just for shock value but who knows.

Speed is popular there though. Alot of speed and mushrooms.

I don't believe 20,000 yen for a hit of acid. Do you realize that is about 200 USD? You probably do. That's ridiculous.

Yeah I've been an exchange student to Japan, albeit before I did any drugs. Amphetamines are popular there and fit their national character to a tee. I never ran across any big thugs on meth there, and am kind of glad I didn't.

At my college in the US I hung out with some Japanese exchange students because I spoke their language, and I introduced a lot of them to pot. Most of them gave it a big ol' thumbs down. I've tended to find Japanese attitudes toward cannabis pretty negative on the whole. It's just not a drug they seem cut out for.

Foreigners in Japan seem to get nailed and deported for drug-related incidents with a pretty astonishing rate. I used to chalk this up to a fascist police force that watches them like hawks and enjoys busting them and seeing their asses written up in the tabloids and kicked out. But after reading what you wrote CreativeRandom, now I think that's only half the story. I wonder if it's often a case of the mob discovering some Westerner growing his own plant or bringing in drugs to share with friends and taking a little bit of market share away from them, so ratting them out to an all-too-willing-to-pounce police force.

I grew and sold small amounts of indoor green to other foreigners and Taiwanese people I knew personally and I could trust. I went to plenty of clubs and raves and parties and festivals around Taiwan, and I spoke the language, but I NEVER brought baggies of pot to sell, even though I was sure there would have been a market for it. But I knew there would also be goons from well-organized drug rings who would at least rough me up and take my stash ("I got it from that thin American guy with spiked dyed hair who's walking around."), and at worst point me out to the police. I usually brought only one pipe packed to the gills with green for myself and my friends for the night, and no more.

The thing I conclude from CreativeRandom's experience and my own is that drug users in Asian countries keep it really hush hush, are very good at covering their asses, and don't easily trust people to talk about or use drugs with them. The stakes, both social and legal, are just too great.

China's another story. There were farm villages in some provinces where you could see these old dudes sqatting around town taking big bong rips. A 70something shopkeeper in Dali, Yunnan pointed across the street to a gnarled, ancient little tree in a vacant lot the size of a hedge and with a trunk 3 inches in diameter. "I think that's marijuana," he said, "I keep seeing people picking pieces off of it to smoke." Sure enough he was right.

You DO pay a hell of a lot for hash in japan indeed. And I have seen Ecstasy tabs sold for 5,000yen a piece, so 20,000 for a blotter may not be unreasonable. This is a country where people happily pay f*ckloads of money to get a consumer item they want. When I was there, the RC boom hadn't really started yet, and the easiest drugs to get hold of were meth and mushrooms. True, apart from mushrooms (back then sold openly in headshops) drugs are very much a taboo subject, and admitting to drugs would have most people shun you and possibly turn you over to the police.

I have heard of foreigners being reported to the police by people they knew, and they were put on the plane out of the country before they knew it, having to rely on someone else remaining behind to help them recover their possessions. I got searched multiple times upon entering japan, but I was never carrying, of course. Hm, I will never forget the time they found some cigarettes and some rolling papers with some corners torn off in my luggage . . . I freely admitted to having used the substance outside of their country and laughed while they were asking all sorts of questions, because I knew I wasn't carrying...

Tokyo is a fun place with plenty plenty partygoers who are as bright and bubbly as the world of work is bland. The perfect antithesis. Maybe i wasn't there long enough, but I never saw any of the territorial gang stuff others someone has mentioned.

But about the article... I get so scornful when I read of all the drug raids and seizures and whatnot . . . just forget it guv - you'll NEVER catch them all and people will always get high. hy not get used to it? It's a waste fo time trying to stop it. It doesn't even reduce usage. Just puts people's lives at risk and makes those that pull the strings filthy rich.

Dead on. They have a much more "neighorbly" social system. Kind of hard to really describe it, but I will try: They have more of a network with the neighbors and other people, and this includes and probably is the cause of a high amount of japanease gossip. Japanease people in general love to gossip. They always talk about their neighbors, whats goin on over there, et cetera. Even if it is just speculation, it spreads like wildfire.

Japanease people in particular are also extremely self conscious about being embarrassed, which ties in to gossip. A japanease mom will go hysterical if their child makes informal jokes in a store, moves shit around (even if they put it back), and causes "a scene". They don't like attention. In America, you see people screaming on the streets all the time, in good fun or otherwise. In Japan, people don't like to attract that kind of attention to themselves.

Reminds me of this one time. I was in rural Japan, at an airport hotel that was sooo far away from the airport. I walked down some street, thinking on one was out. I yelled baka out loud in boredom, and right afterwards I heard a loud shriek!

And I have seen Ecstasy tabs sold for 5,000yen a piece, so 20,000 for a blotter may not be unreasonable.

I can believe 5,000 yen, but 20,000 is a big leap. That is an extra digit there. Plus, multiplied fourfold. That is like 50 dollars to 200 dollars. 5 to 20. Big difference.

Yakuza anyone?

Cigarettes are huge there. Everyone smokes. Everyone. You cannot believe it until your there. As in 13 year olds smoking inside the mall and no one cares kind of smoking. It's ridiculous. Japan is about 15 years behind in American Fashion and Trends, but about 5 ahead in everyday technology.

iirc they have tougher policy on weed than they do on tweak. If i ever decided to go out in a haze of tweaker glory, i'm moving to japan and buying a bunch of meth. japense arcardes, tweak, japenes schoolgirls, THATS THE FUCKING WAY TO GO OUT.
