In a previous thread I mentioned I took Diphenhydramine, 50 mg almost every night for about 4 years. I am now cutting down to 25 mg and I am getting a constant nagging pain in my upper left abdomen and diarrhea as well.

I read somewhere that Diphenhydramine can lower ones stomach acid or that the stomach can increase stomach acid production to compensate. If this is the case what can I do to lessen the effects.

I also take 500 mg of Tetracycline for 1 1/2 years so that may be the cause of my stomach aches too.

i have been taking DPH for many years. sometimes daily, and i have never experienced WD from secession

i take antihistamines daily as i have allergies. I can tell you from 10 years of experience there are no withdrawals. You may want to see a Dr. about the likely unrelated issue you're having though or just wait it out. Seriously, i take 50mg of hydroxyzine a day and don't have any issues when i don't take it, so diphenhydryamine is going to be insignificant compared to that.

i also took 50-100mg DPH daily for many years for sleep before upgrading to hydroxyzine and seroquel and DPH is so much weaker than those two that you would not believe, so i really don't think your issues are related to your moderate and therapeutic use.

OP, YES IT CAN! I have experienced the same symptoms as you (never taken tetracycline though).

Diphenhydramine affects serotonin, and serotonin is mainly present in the gut (intestines). When you stop the diphen your body goes out of whack a little bit. Its normal, just your serotonin system getting back to homeostasis.

It should pass in a few days/a week at most.

Switch to melatonin for your night time sleep aid.

Actually, first check if the tetracycline interacts with melatonin (it probably does)... Just go cold turkey on the diphen. Rough week but you will make it (I did)
