Ive been trying to quit smoking for the past few weeks with no luck. I have tried the patch and the gum. I cant afford the nicotine inhaler. My doctor gave me a prescription for zyban and told me that it was unlikely that it would interact with the above meds. But i would feel better with a second opinion all the same.

I am currently on 150mg's of amitriptyline a night for nerve pain and depression so i cant go off it. I also take 2mg's of clonazepam a day for anxiety and codeine. I dont take the codeine everyday i just take it when i need it.

Is bupropion likely to dangerously interact with either of these meds and what would be the likely interaction? Im mostly concerned about it interacting with amitriptyline since both amitriptyline and bupropion are norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitors.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it will interact negativly with amitriptyline (serotonin syndrome, catecholamine overload, etc. leading to hypertensive crisis, hyperthermia, etc.)

The clonazepam should be fine with the bupropion. As a benzodiazepine it will help get rid of the stimulant-side effects, including seizures, of bupropion.

Codeine is methylmorphine, pro-drug to morphine. There really shouldn't be too much of an interaction with codeine and bupropion.

It's not like the safest ever combo with the amitryp, but I'd do it.

Bupropion isn't a norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor of any note. People mix it wit TCAs in clinical trials and people didn't drop dead.

So no, I wouldn't be concerned.

On the other hand, there is no evidence that bupropion is any more effective than amitrip in getting your to quit cigarettes. Likewise, no evidence that it's any better than the patch.

Thanks for clearing that up. I always thought that bupropion was a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. I dont know where i got that.

My doctor pretty much told me the same thing about bupropion being no better then the patch, but seing as how the patch didnt work the zyban might be worth a try. It's actually cheaper then the patch on a monthly basis so thats a plus. It's sure as hell alot cheaper then smokes.

I've quite smoking a few times. It has been over a year now. Total bitch. What I found harder than the nicotine was the action of smoking itself. I'd go the libraray and buy a book on cognative behaviour therapy

How many do you smoke a day?

I smoke about 30 cigs a day now. I was quit for almost 2 years up until awile ago. I had a really bad bout of pain so that pissed me off and i bought a pack of smokes. I used to smoke about 40 a day or more before i quit last time.

Ya the action of smoking is just as bad as nicotine to quit. When you give up smoking you suddenly have all this free time on your hands. I quit cold turkey last time but i was on alot of opiates so i think thats why i quit so easy.

I have no choice but to quit now the price of cigarettes here is insane. Plus they are making me feel like shit.
