in my pill bottle..
i am a longtime chronic pain patient...been on oxy, codeine, hydro, morphine, trams..you name it..and thats just for pain alone.

my Q (not looking for source btw) is are there many docs that still prescribe barbs on a reg ilike they used to???? they were handed out for everything back in the day and now benzos have taken the place of them(many good reasons..but dont do much of what a barb does since im not looking for another anxiety med!). the ones like fioricet (would prolly work better then the opiates that seem to make headaches worse after)and fiorinal 3(which seems perfect for alot of the pain i have) seem like they are still prescribed modestly, but honestly never known anyone with a barb script...

i have migraines, neck.back.shoulder pain, andthink the combo of pharms in fiorinal 3 would be perfect.

i wont feel like a junkie like always asking for my perc refil though.. i did legit research...and out of not wanting to be riding the on/off wagon of addiction with percs and norcos. codeine was never that addictive to me for some reason, and i do know butalbital is a barb and habit forming too...but both milder than hydromorphone or oxy like i was getting!

seems like the only barbs is phenobarbital for dogs and thats it.

any one have some old school stories back in the day when they were everywhere(atleast it seemed) or anyone on a barb atm ,,,let me know if it helps and if they a worth gettin to the docs for..otherwise i will just ask for some T3s that i hate but get like candy.....

Barbiturates are not more "mild" than opiates, there is a very real possibility of overdose and death when you combine them with other depressants. The other reason they were removed from use is the massive dependence potential - which was greatly underplayed in the release of benzodiazepines, even though they have the same withdrawal process.

The only places barbiturates are used in North America these days are in Fioracet and friends (i think that's it, with acetaminophen, butalbital and codeine), phenobarbital for epilepsy, and certain super potent barbiturates for the Wada test, euthanasia, and anethesia induction. Some barbiturates are also illegaly diverted from their use as a buffering agent, but that's a small percentage of the total use.

TL;DR: No, doctors do not prescribe barbiturates any more.

thanks for the answer...and everything you said is true...I know barbs are just as bad...but nothing else has helped.

its a mild barb tho..not that it makes a diff..but i honestly need something for the migraines and shoulder ache.

and you MUST be wrong...ive heard of atleast..not known personally..but heard of dozens of patients getting them and all 98% were headache related...i think i have a good chance of walking out with a script. im not looking for a benzo sub or anything new to get fu#ked up on...i need the pain to go away, and ive TRIED ALMOST everything..off label..dosage raised..etc.

The only barbiturate prescribed for headaches anymore is butalbital in the form of Fioracet and Fiorinal. Seconal, Tuinal etc - all the other "fun" barbs - have fallen out of use and the few remaining Rx's would be "grandfathered" in. Most headache control is done with triptans and other drugs today, not barbs.

You probably do stand a chance at getting a Fiorinal script, but don't expect to walk out with Seconal.

The triptans are more effective than butalbital is anyway if you ask me (I've been a migraine patient for years and have been prescribed and used every migraine drug out there).

One of my friends overdosed (fatally) on methadone and butalbital.

So yeah, it's still prescribed. Is it recreational/worth it? Not as much as benzodiazepines (which are far safer). Some people enjoy barbiturates but I would say to be exceedingly careful if you do choose to take advantage of the medicinal effects of a barbiturate.

Fent,but only as last choice..

Hello mate. I'm a CP patient too, i use fentanyl, the patches, and i can say that it works very good for the pain. Of course there are a lot of defects; it's very very potent, very addicted and others, i would use it only if the pain is so strong that you can't live with it, and if it doesn't stop with oxy, norco and all these, it's the last in line, final choice. I think you should stick with oxy, and even better if you can, with norcos..maybe some k-pins would help you too..8).Good luck, whatever you do:)

tried them...im sure after the list of meds ive tried they would atleast let me try and see if it helps. its not hard to find .....8)

if i went in and said i want to try these instead of oxy..its apretty good sign im not there just for drugs.
