Blind for a day

I decided it would be interesting to blindfold myself for a day and see how it goes.

Managed to pull of a whole day blindfold with help from my girlfriend but towards the end it got a bit frustrating. I spent the whole day indoors listening to music and audiobooks, having sex, meditating and getting high. I expected a bit more from the experience and I'd like to do it again while also going outside.

Overall it was interesting, sounds I never pay attention to were quite obvious, everything took twice as long, eating was especially tricky and I think I got to appreciate sight even more. When I took my blindfold off the dim light made me cry. The dreams after my blind day were particularly vivid.

Some questions:
1.Anyone else tried this or something similar like going temporarily blind but not by choice?
2.Do you think such an experience could be helpful and would it have any physical impact on the brain due to neuroplasticity?
3.Could blindinfolding yourself for let's say a week be dangerous?

Hope this is the right forum for this, please move it if it isn't.

tldr: Blindfolded myself for a day and bragging about it.

Wow that's really interesting. I bet that definitely really increases your other senses. I know there's a few restaurants in existence that serve their customers in complete darkness, supposedly so they can appreciate the true taste of the food without being distracted by any other sights.... Personally I think sight is an important sense to have while eating :P

I do think your experiment is pretty interesting though. Any reason for doing this? Do you know someone who is blind? Or just wanted to try it out?

Yeah, that's a pretty cool idea.

I've also found the idea of spending time in a sensory deprivation tank pretty interesting. Basically you float in saltwater heated to exactly human body temperature, in a completely pitch black and soundproof chamber. You can't feel any pressure or temperature on your skin, you can't see anything, and for the most part you can't hear anything (perhaps your breathing and heartbeat). Supposedly it's really quite a trip, especially after you've spent a good 45 minutes in the tank.

Wow, this is so interesting!! Also, that salt water tank sounds insane too!! Do you go in naked? I could see that making more sense.

I would like to try this too, but I also wonder if there is any ocular or neurological risk? I bet taking the blindfold off was euphoric as hell. Just curious, what did you get high on? Do you feel the high was altered? Better? Worse?

This is so interesting, I really want to try it now. Maybe even with another person!!

The visual system matures around 11-13 years of age. That number used to be age 8 which is what I was taught during my Master's in Visual Science in 1997. Wearing a blindfold is not harmful to the adult visual system. You will not lose sight from doing this.

What an interesting thread,

The visual system matures around 11-13 years of age. That number used to be age 8 which is what I was taught during my Master's in Visual Science in 1997. Wearing a blindfold is not harmful to the adult visual system. You will not lose sight from doing this.

As far as i know, the human brain stops developing at 21 though doesnt it?

I don't think the brain ever STOPS developing. Maybe its physical growth is over, but it's still gonna change.

I was referring to the plasticity of the visual system. I have no educated clue about other areas of the brain.
You won't hurt your vision by doing this experiment of "blindess".

I was a bit worried about how sensitive I was to light after just 1 day of darkness, won't blindfolding yourself for a long time and then exposing yourself to light cause damage?

@Seattle_Stranger Just smoked some weed, was high for a few hours, didn't notice much difference but weed hasn't been visual for a very long while. I suppose sounds became even more pronounced but I'm not sure.

@firefighter I think the idea just came somehow, I don't have any blind friends. I've been reading some interesting neuroscience books lately so that could have something to do with it.

I noticed that if I act out my ideas even if they seem silly I get more new ones to try, it sort of feeds on itself. If I have a potentially interesting idea and I just think, oh that could be interesting and don't do anything about it I don't get "rewarded" with any more.

I have always had odd interests and odd items I wanted

My mom was always a fucking bitch who didn't understand creativity

Anyways, this relates to your post. I also have odd ideas like this that I just have to do, lol
