Now very old school for BP issue ,5th line med in the uk.

The first Propronolol -sp= betanol which slows the heart and cns/

Atenlol works just for the heart [edit]

Now I assume they work on GABA receptors so why are they do different to Benzo's ,do they have the same effects on the body but the benzo's calm the brain.

they calm the body while benzos calm both, but the latter are sooo addictive that it's not worth it to take em in basically every benzo addict's opinion

they work on adrenergic auto-receptors I think, overloading them so the body implements stress-reduction mthods

Beta blockers don't work on gaba they work by blocking the adrenic system which symptomatically is similar to benzos but not pharmacologically at all.

Beta-blockers mainly calm the physical aspect of anxiety... the tachycardia, the palpitations, the adrenaline increase etc wheras benzos flat out kill the root cause of anxiety while slowing down your CNS as well. Since atenolol is pretty cardio selective, it's not as effective as propanolol in regards to calming physical effects of anxiety. Atenolol mainly eases the increased heart rate and palpitations.

Withdrawal from both is very dangerous and unpleasant, I'm currently dependent on atenolol and have gone through etizolam withdrawal before so I know how nasty both can be, but beta-blocker withdrawal seems alot more managable as long as you taper of course (abrubtly stopping beta blockers can kill and can easily lead to heart attacks or stroke) and the withdrawal mainly consists of a haywire andrenergic storm. Benzo withdrawal causes the same, but with a whole bunch of other symptoms so if you can get by on beta-blockers I would avoid benzos, or at least only use them in times of panic.

I swopped to atenol from propronolol as the UK version 80mg I was using was XR but here in Thailand anything XR is a rip ,the atenol is alot cheaper + 1 pill but I was hitting 160mg of Prop but I am going to switch back as I feel they were better overall.

ATM I Use a bodybuilding drug that is a beta-agonist so I am use ace inhibitors.

BP is way lower than average whereas on prop I just made average but it's probably a combo of things.

I had an experience with beta blockers that almost killed me, with a lot of help from three doctors.
As we know beta blockers are an efficient medication for some heart conditions and propranolol can be used for not just heart problems but as already stated anxiety and believe it or not, I didn't at first, it is also used to help treat migraine headaches.
Anyway to cut a long story short
I was in hospital with chest pain after previously having 5MI's and appx 8NSTEMI's the beta blocker I was on didn't seem to be helping much, AF with a testing rate of 130bpm so another was added, bisoprolol and ivabradine, still no change so sotolol was added, still no change so an anti arrythmia drug dronederone was added.
The problem here was that the other drugs were not changed or dosages lowered.
The cocktail of drugs were nicorandol, relieves chest pain opening the arteries, also lowers blood pressure, ramipril, lowers blood pressure, isosorbidemononitrate which is a form of gtn and opens arteries and lowers blood pressure, bisoprolol, sotolol and dronederone all designed to slow the rate and your blood pressure, there was also another heart med I can't remember that acted the same way.
After three days on these meds I went to use the bathroom, on the way back I felt really dizzy and sick and almost passed out next to my bed.
The cardiac nurse, just came on duty, took my obs and I had a bp of 65/45 and a heart rate of 22bpm, she tilted my bed back and called for help. Luckily for me a consultant had come in on his day off 26th December and was on the ward, he took one look at my chart and knew what was happening, all the meds had caused heart block and I had been dangerously overdosed by the doctors. He called down to the pharmacy to make up an IV solution containing calcium and other drugs to reverse the effects, he also called a vascular nurse to put in a line because my veins had collapsed. While this was going on I felt pretty ill and someone had called my wife to say I was critically ill and could die. Luckily a line was put in, fluids were pumped into raise my bp and the meds from the pharmacy arrived, I was moved into intensive care and administered drugs to help with the vomiting from the cocktail given to me.
Everything worked out fine and I moved back into cardiac care the next day.

Even professionals can screw up and I have learnt to ask questions, even if it annoys the doctors, about every drug I have been given since then.

Propanolol is f***ing useless in comparison to any Benzo. But unfortunately because Benzo's work so well (To begin with!) They're extremely addictive and if you're not very very careful can be life destroying.

I hope and pray for the day when a workable, safer alternative is synthesised.

Beta-blockers mainly calm the physical aspect of anxiety... the tachycardia, the palpitations, the adrenaline increase etc wheras benzos flat out kill the root cause of anxiety while slowing down your CNS as well.

Benzos also act as adenosine reuptake inhibitors on their own, leading to vasodilation of cororary arteries. This effect is independent from their anti-anxiety properties. They are very versatile drugs, no wonder they are on the UN's list of essential drugs for any basic health system, or something like that.

My point was that benzos do both, kill anxiety and ease the CNS effects that is. I agree, very useful drugs when used responsibly.

Propranolol never had much of an effect for me, and I have pretty bad (and worsening anxiety). Still have a few tablets of it lying around actually.

Benzodiazepines work pretty well but I've never abused them & never will. As a category of drug they just don't excite or interest me, and to be honest I don't really find them that addicting at all. Ymmv
