Alright BLers throw 'em up throw 'em up. Believe me when I say I struggled mightily to come up with an even 10. I couldn't figure anything out after 9 and just picked one out of the remaining three albums from 2014 in my iTunes library. Maybe y'all will have better luck.

1. Run the Jewels - Run the Jewels 2.

Hands down the best album of the year for me. It came along at such a weird, frightening political time in this country, and this goofy, furious, sexy, vicious album was the best thing that came my way this year. full album. fav tracks: early, love again, close your eyes and count to fuck.

2. Future Islands - Singles

Weirdest album of the year. His voice is somewhere between Morrissey and death metal growls. I know people who hate this album or love it. It's a non stop winner as far as I'm concerned. full album. fav tracks: seasons, doves, a dream of you and me.

3. Azaelia Banks - Broke With Expensive Taste

We don't call it seapunk anymore. witch gaze? rap craft? whatever it's called this album grew on me like a tumor. Initially thought it was terribly boring and too foreign, I am way more into the subtlety and bizarreness of it now, and that I can divorce it from NYC a little bit. full album. fav tracks: heavy metal and reflective, bbd, idle delilah, yung rupunzel

4. Wye Oak - Shriek

Eerie, uncomfortable and just generally gave me bad feelings in the terror/thriller sort of way. Something bad happened on that album. I love her smooth rolling voice and admire that it's just a duo. I've never heard an album of theirs before this one, and most people tell me that this sounds nothing like their old work. Fine by me, I love it. full album. fav tracks: shriek, glory, the tower.

5. Pallbearer - Foundations of Burden

Finally. Good old fashioned doom metal straight out of the south. Furious I missed them, the slow fuzzy bass and the clean operatic vocals. It's been ages since I heard any clean old fashioned doom like this. They even played my favorite venue here god dammit. full album. fav tracks: worlds apart, the ghost i used to be.

6. Perfume Genius - Too Bright

A gay album that's really gay in the best/worst way. None of this lady gaga born this way shit, but the other kind. cracked, peeling, riddled with disease. The stuff that bad parents tell their kids when their kids come out. Some of it is absolutely traumatic - the feeling of being trapped in a totally alien body, the anxiety of self discovery, but some of it is just killer. no family is safe, when i sashay. in fucking deed.
queen - official video (directed by ssion) fav tracks: queen, my body, i decline, fool

7. Lana Del Rey - Ultraviolence

Damn girl why didn't you get a band earlier? Her arrangements are better, and she sounds so much richer with some drums behind her. She obviously thinks Lorde is her biggest competition (which I don't get?) but the songs are way more grown up here. I can't explain it any other way but this gif set.

full album. fav tracks: west coast, sad girl, fucked my way up to the top

8. Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - Gone Girl Soundtrack

They messed up with TGWTDT soundtrack, it was overly expansive and too cold without enough of lisbeth's insanity to make it feel alive. Gone Girl soundtrack is way better, but still not as awesome as The Social Network soundtrack, which remains to this day one of my most played albums. Gone Girl is way more...atmospheric and still than TGWTDT or The Social Network, and with the same level of warmth (lack of warmth?) that made TGWTDT feel so god damn barren.

full album. fav tracks: what have we done to each other?, technically missing, consummation

9. True Detective - OST by T.Bone Burnett.

I know. Not a real album. Sorry, it's going to count. That forty or so songs has been playing non stop, non stop since the series ended. It's absolutely phenomenal, and one of the best soundtracks of all time. if you didn't watch this show then i don't know what to tell you. full album. fav tracks: The McIntosh County Singers - Sign of the Judgement, Handsome Family - Far From Any Road (True Detective Theme), Sleep - Holy Mountain, Melvins - A History of Bad Men, Townes Van Zandt - Lungs

10. ??????? I guess Mac De Marco - Salad Days.

For that once in a 6 month time period when I get stoned and want to skateboard with my roommates and eat cheddar goldfish. full album. fav tracks: salad days, brother, let my baby stay

so....let's see your list bluelight.

RTJ2 for the reasons mentioned. recall watching an older el-p interview and he casually mentions working with mike on some stuff not knowing what it would become. grrreat.

most likey would include some on your list but haven't spent that much time with them as i'd like.

Andy Stott - Faith in Strangers

Gangsta_Boo_Beatking-Underground_Cassette_Tape_Music

I think this year was pretty terrible with album releases but here's what I liked:

Timber Timbre - Hot Dreams

Mastodon - Once More 'Round the Sun

Royal Blood - Royal Blood

Wow ken, I know doom ain't your shit but Pallbearer at #4???

I can't do it in order unless I answer like this:
Miserable by Bongripper

I can't come up with 10 albums tbh. There were more disappointing releases (JBT, ETID, Ides of Gemini, nehruvianDOOM, azelia banks (yes i know she won them awards), etc) than nice surprises
I dug Big KRIT, RTJ2, YOB, Black Milk, Hail Mary Mallon, Ana Tijoux (even tho I couldn't understand shit)

The best musical creation of 2k14 tho? None other

Azealia hasn't won shit for that album and wasn't even nominated. Thus part of the controversy around her. My list is in no particular order except for rtj at number one. I haven't spent much time with Pallbearer but doom is definitely my thing.

Woooooops I reread the post that made me add that comment and it was itchy areola not azealia banks (at the AMAs.)

I'll admit I haven't heard the entire new pallbearer album, but I don't think they do doom well. I came across them when their last release got love from the music scene.. They hardly ever cough up a riff I can get down with, the drummer needs to step up his game, there's just not enough going on for me. They're repeating a riff that's boring to begin with, without variation and extra detail within the repetition?? aaaand the "solos" my god.. Do they know what a key is? Don't get me wrong here either, I could see how people might enjoy this and I don't think it's horrible, I just can't understand the praise.

Nas - Illmatic xx
Sturgill Simpson - Metamodern sounds in country music
String theory - s/t
Nehruviandoom

Not necessarily the best, just the ones I can remember

Just realized that I missed out on the new Chinese Man release called "Groove Sessions Vol 3". This is definitely worth a mention!

No order.
No real album of the year for me.
But some of the releases I've enjoyed in 2014 off the top of my head:

Bear Hands - Distractions
Painted Palms - Forever
The War On Drugs - Lost in a Dream
Mogwai - Rave Tapes
The Faint - Doom Abuse
Circulatory System - Mosaics Within Mosaics
Metronomy - Love Letters

And it was kinda meh, but I still gotta rep for him since he's one of my favorite artists, this was just one of his most dull works, definitely my least favorite of his. I think he just needs to experiment by going in a different direction for the next release but:
Chad Vangaalen - Shrink Dust

Also I really shoulda listened to the ASMZ album from this year. Don't know why I haven't yet..

yesss @ Earth Sick! sooo many good albums this year tbh!

Tove Lo - Queen of the Clouds
Charli XCX - SUCKER

ok i know those are my top 2... i'll come and finish this list later after i do some re-listening :)

Hmm, okay. I cannot excrete out 10, that is certain.

But:

-Mogwai: Rave Tapes. Good album, 7/10. Not Mogwai's greatest (Mr Beast!) but still worthy.
-Alcest: Shelter. French shoegaze/pseudo-bm. Their second weakest album, but no band sounds like Alcest. Check them out for quite unique music.
-Laibach: Spectre. Laibach, notorious industrial art-group. Great album, blend of EBM, martial, neo-classical and industrial.
-Darkspace: Darkspace III I. Swiss ambient black metal unmatched in darkness. Claustrophobic and brilliant music.
-Silver Mount Zion: Fuck Off, Get Free.... Post-rock/weird stuff. Awesome music, less-then-stellar vocals. Would love an instrumental version!
-Swans: To Be Kind. What can I say, a great reinvention by a great band. Do I really hear post rock there?
-Lustmord: Krakow. Recorded in 2010 but only just released in 2014 (I think). Typically Lustmord boomy drones. Excellent if somewhat non-descript.
-Infected Mushroom: Friends on Mushrooms vol 3. Just good complicated texture beats. IM, I will see you soon! :)

I did it!

Run the Jewels - Run the jewels 2
The War On Drugs - Lost in a Dream
Allo Darlin - We Come from the Same Place
The Dø - Shake Shook Shaken
St Vincent - St Vincent
Stars - No One is Lost
Tennis - Ritual Repeat
Wye Oak - Shriek
Megan Washington - There There
Craft Spells - Nausea
