Hi, I rarely stray from EDD but I'm after advice for someone I know who's in his 40s.

A few years ago he started suffering chronic insomnia. Life was stressful at the time and he was taking amphetamine and GBL at weekends which didn't help. For a long time he used GBL or temazepam most nights just to get a few hours sleep. He also suffered a lot of anxiety and brain fog. This went on for a year or so until he was in such a mess he had to do something about it.

By the beginning of this year he'd stopped using amphetamine, benzos and GBL. He was toughing out the sleepness nights as much as he could, only using diphenhydramine / promethazine / phenibut when he was desperate for a good night. Sleep gradually improved and he started to feel more normal. Someone on here told me that once he was back to normal he should be good to go again as long as he didn't over do it this time.

After about six months of abstinance had a night out on amphetamine and GBL. The following week the anxiety and brain fog returned for a few days, but far worse - the insomnia returned for about two weeks!

Does this mean he's not left it long enough or is he destined for a life of abstinance? He doesn't even want to do it very much, once every 4-6 weeks will do. I've trawled the internet for GABA related advice and the following things keep being mentioned in relation to anxiety / insomnia :-

Alcohol - he has the occasional drink but not bothered if he can't.

Benzos - temazepam would be useful after amphetamine, so less than once a month.

GHB/GBL - drug of choice. Would love to be able to do it again but can he?

Phenibut - about once a week to get a good nights sleep. It doesn't seem to cause any immediate negative effects but is it delaying GABA recovery?

Valerian - he uses this for sleep and anxiety but continued use seems to make him worse.

L-Theanine - sometimes works for sleep but not always.

L-Glutamine - occasional use when he's feeling shit.

Picamilion - not tried yet.

So, in summary - he would like to occasionally take amphetamine and GBL but can't cope with weeks of sleepless nights afterwards.

The questions are :-

Should he abstain for a few more months before trying again?

In the meantime should he stay away from alcohol / phenibut / valerian / theanine / glutamine ? Are they being helpful or harmful?

Should he try picamilion?

Should he buy a pipe and slippers and grow old gracefully?

I think he should avoid the GBL/GHB. It's great for getting to sleep until it isn't. The longer I used it, the more powerful the dopamine rebound effect would get (and the less pleasant the positives became even after taking months off). If I took 4 grams of GHB over the course of a couple hours, I'd have to double or triple my usual benzo dose in order to avoid waking up wide awake two or three hours after passing out from the G. After a while it really seems to rewire your brain, and it seems likely G is the drug most responsible for his problems. It seems so innocuous at first. Once you've made a habit of G and quit, it's best to forget about it. It'll never be like it was the first few months your friend used it, in my opinion. The euphoria disappears, the side effects grow, and it's common to experience that mental fog for at least a day after using it. What's worse is when you know the fog is there but fail to detect it having forgotten what 'baseline' felt like ;)

This is what we feared, that GBL could still be his enemy many months or years after :(

This is so true. Avoid any Ghb gbl bdo all that. When I had a rather Serious issue fuck im embarrassed to even mention amounts I took....we will just say a bottle and then some a day. Six seven eight doses till a two hour blackout wake up repeat..repeat...you dont ever see it coming. Its horrible. I would never sleep more than 3 hours after it became a habit and waking up was an awful feeling until dosing again..... I fucked my stomach up bad on some less pure g or I didnt store it right it got to the point there was no buzz just a blackout and puking.....fuck that shit

Glad to hear that :) I don't think reasonable doses of phenibut (=<2 g) would be a problem.
