Strange question. I'm currently backpacking and am connecting through an airport in NJ tomorrow. I've got a few boxes of various benzos (just for sleeping on long trains/planes/buses - schedule IV) that I'd like to keep on me.

I don't have a script for them. Reading online it looks like I'm in for a giant sentence if I was caught with them that seem almost ridiculously punitive. Is this correct, should I just throw them away?

I do have a receipt from the pharmacist which sold them. Would that work as a 'prescription'?

Maybe. Try and find a pill bottle with your name on it and just put the benzos in the pill bottle. I doubt theyll be looking up your pills to check what they actually are. Just dont have various different pills in one bottle.

Actually you should have a prescription and medical report + the receipts from the pharmacy.
In the medical report it should state how much you take every day and the total amount should match with what you have.
Why don´t you have a prescription? And why are you taking so many boxes? The problem is not only when you leave, but what are going to show if someone wants to see your luggage when you arrive, depending where you arrive you may have to declare.

If they were prescribed to you, go to your doctor even if he has to do this online. Otherwise, you are simply risking being caught..and I don´t know where you are heading to. But US and Canada could be very understanding if you have all documented, but seek for info of your arrival place.
Do you have the receipts from the pharmacy?? Are you insured?

I'm heading to the UK, where I reside where I have a private psychiatrist who has prescribed these to me before and would be willing to write that out, but I'm not going to have time or the ability to get that before I get this connecting flight.

The benzos here (zopiclone) are prescription free so I don't think I could even get a prescription easily if I wanted one.

I'm fine with getting them into the UK, but worried about the US. They are vastly cheaper here than a private prescription in the UK.

i think to be honest it's not worth the hassle.

ime they aren't going to give you any troubles unless you're talking boxes and boxes of them where it looks like you'd be reselling them. Any receipts from the pharmacy should offer protection against having them seized.

I've always taken an OTC bottle of whatever, dumped it out, refilled with my opiates/benzos and kept in my carry-on. Unless they're something recognizable like the old OC 80's or you do something stupid like yelling 'Allahu Akbar' nobody is going to take the time to ID your pills. YMMV but this isn't the place for legal discussion anyway.

If they're in official packaging (like blister packs) no one will even give them a second glance. I speak from experience on this matter.

This is the best advice so far. Option #2 is obviously the best bet.

I know a guy who once brought 2 ounces of mushrooms and a cigarette pack filled with joints through TSA. And the joints even went throug the Xray thing.

If you end up doing what pinpoint said. But use bigger bottles, so you dont have like 8 bottles. If they see a ton of bottles, they might take them out just to see whatsup. Also, if you can "replace" or put on a new seal (the thing you rip off after taking the cap off) it will add to your chances. Realistically though, most airport TSA isn't too hardcore and I really wouldn't stress too hard.

Where I live, most agree, has one of the most brutal TSA checkpoints in the country. They will hold up a line of 60 people just to send a 5 year old girls through the "tornado blaster bomb detection box." I seent it.

Good luck! I didn't realize this sort of talk was allowed @___@
