Family demanding justice after son dies from fatal overdose

A Queensland family whose 21-year-old son died of a drug overdose after taking a pain relief patch given to him by his personal trainer is demanding justice.

Michael Clayton, a part-time chef, was devoted to keeping fit. Chris Walmsley, or Chris Williams as he now goes by, was Michael's personal trainer.

Accredited through Fitness Australia, Walmsley's business, Limitless Professional Training, has tens of thousands of followers on social media, where he boasts of his integrity in helping clients lose unwanted kilos.

But many of his followers would be unaware that in addition to providing meal plans and nutrition advice, Walmsley has also allegedly been supplying drugs to his clients.

In the lead up to his death, Mr Clayton suffered a leg injury. Walmsley allegedly gave him a stick-on patch to help with the pain. But embedded in the patch was the drug Fentanyl - a restricted prescription drug which should only be dispensed by a doctor.

When Mr Clayton stuck the patch on to his skin, it gave him a massive overdose. His girlfriend phoned for an ambulance the following morning after he would not wake up.

"The nurses and the doctors couldn't believe the size of the patch that was given, they said he had no chance," Mr Clayton's mother, Lisa, told A Current Affair.

While paramedics were able to revive Mr Clayton, it was too late, and he was left with permanent brain damage - leaving no option for his mother but to turn off his life support.

Despite Mr Clayton's alleged death from the drugs that Walmsley had given him, all he has been charged with is four counts of supplying and possessing drugs, including Fentanyl and testosterone.

"He's been hit with what they can hit him with," Ms Clayton said. "Because Michael put the patch on, there's no manslaughter charge - which I think is ridiculous because if you're handing out and supplying dangerous drugs, why shouldn't you be responsible for the effects it has on someone?"

Ms Clayton says Walmsley has not contacted the family and has shown no remorse for his actions.

Walmsley's legal team has indicated that he won't be contesting the charges. He will appear before court tomorrow for sentencing.
