Created in 1992, Apothicom, is an association for information and prevention, that conducts public health research programmes and develops tools for injection drug use-related harm reduction.
Apothicom created and developed the first prevention kit, SteriboxTM, and fought to make this one widely available in pharmacies. Later on, Stericup and Sterifilt, single-use cup and filter, completed the kit. Today, Steribox, containing these prevention tools, are supplied by pharmacies(in France), syring exchange programme facilities and automatic vending and disposing machines.
Apothicom proposes concrete information and prevention tools aiming at limiting the drug-use damages. With the creation of these tools, our purpose is to build and promote prevention strategies which can fit into local realities. The success of the actions we launch is absolutely dependent on local support: volunteers, healthcare facilities, physicians, pharmacists…
Stericup/Cooker:
To reduce harm arising from sharing and re-use of mixing spoons/cookers, such as the transmission of hepatitis B and C and HIV, abscesses, endocarditis and cellulitis from bacterial contamination. To encourage the use of aseptic mixing and safer injecting techniques.
Sterifilt/Filter:
Reduces injection related harms, such as: abscess, phlebitis, “dirty hits” embolism and oedema. Removes 90% of particles measuring more than
5 microns, 100% of particles 10 microns or larger. Retains less than a third of the drug residue held by makeshift filters.
