So let me start this off by saying that I am in no way recommending that everyone go out and get trazodone or that it works for everyone. As with any medication, there can be side effects and you should discuss any medications with a licensed doctor or psychiatrist.

I have had negative reactions to a host of medications (I've been on aripiprazole/Abilify, olanzapine/Zyprexa, ziprasidone/Geodon, risperidone/Risperdal, mirtazapine/Remeron, trazodone/Desyrel, citalopram/Celexa, escitalopram/Lexapro, paroxetine/Paxil, bupropion/Wellbutrin, pregabalin/Lyrica, gabapentin/Neurontin, methylphenidate/Ritalin, lithium carbonate/Eskalith, divalproex sodium/Depakote, oxcarbazepine/Trileptal, lamotrigine/Lamictal, alprazolam/Xanax, lorazepam/Ativan, clonazepam/Klonopin, and diazepam/Valium) with only the benzodiazepines actually being helpful for my anxiety (although I built a rapid tolerance to the sedative AND anxiolytic effects of all of them, regardless of what they say about long term tolerance to anxiolytics not occuring and benzodiazepines increased my rage issues with clonazepam being at the same time the most effective all around benzo and the worst for my rage) and mirtazapine was the only antidepressant that didn't cause a lot of issues. I had nothing but problems with the antipsychotics. Lamotrigine I wasn't on long enough to really make a determination... I think it was helping my mood but I'm a rapid cycler so it takes awhile to really tell.

Anyway, I'm currently on a Valium taper and its not fun. I'm down to 7.5mg right now and have been since December. I started my taper from 20mg on 9/17. Basically, I haven't been sleeping well and that's been making my taper even more unbearable. I have a hearing that I MUST go to (its for disability) on Thursday so I decided to give trazodone a try last night. To my surprise, it worked as well as ever. 50mg put me out to sleep within an hour, I slept all night, and I'm not dragging ass today and I honestly believe that my anxiety upon waking was non-existent as I always wake up anxious and I did not start getting anxious until around 30-45 minutes ago and I've been up for 4 hours.

The only side effect I ever notice with it is very vivid dreams if I take too much (100mg can do it - the first time they ever gave it to me was at 200mg and I woke up in a panic because I got stuck in a repeating dream cycle, freaked the hell out of me) but other than that, its always been positive. Unlike pretty much everything else, trazodone has never caused me to have a panic attack when taken at a reasonable dose between 50-100mg before bed. In fact, in combination with mirtazapine, trazodone stopped a panic attack that was happening before and put me to sleep while the mirtazapine failed on its own.

Anyone else have positive reactions to trazodone? I think one of the biggest problems with recovery is getting sleep. Trazodone, at least for me, is a great way for me to get sleep without worrying about gaining a steep tolerance, having a paradoxical reaction (which I'm extremely prone to), or getting addicted to or having withdrawals from it. It also doesn't mess with a bunch of receptors I don't want it messing with (its a 5-HT2A antagonist and a1 adrenergic antagonist if I remember correctly - it has other actions of course but those are the strongest ones).

I was just glancing over the wiki and thinking about giving trazodone. I initially dismissed it as worthless, but I'm rethinking that. What does it feel like before you fall asleep?

I'm on 150mg Trazodone per day. It's not bad, because I don't have any side effects from it and it is very helpful for getting sleep, but it doesn't do much anymore for my depression and anxiety, so I'd rather get rid of it than upping the dose...

i actually tried recently to start tapering, going down to 125mg first, but five days later or so, I entered a very bad state of mind with strong depression, aggravated anxiety and suicidal thoughts, so I cancelled the project and returned to my original dose. Might be unrelated though, I don't know...

What I'm trying to say, if you're on it for a longer time, it will definetely be a pain in the ass to get rid of, like most antidepressants..

I would say the fact that you're having rebound insomnia from benzo withdrawal could easily be helping modulate the effect of the Trazadone. On the couple occasions I've taken it I was knocked out 10+ hours and woke up still groggy and sedated (but not in a good way).

It's definitely one of those meds that can go strongly negative or positive for different people.

no meds for me, thank you sir. perhaps its not the best forum for such exclamation, but that's the truth. i'm all for healthy lifestyle and letting nature take its course.

I recently started taking trazadone again (I used to take it while I was using and it never worked) and since I've been In Recovery it has done wonders for me. It doesn't seem to work every night but it helps with my anxiety so I'm not bugging out all night about not being able to sleep. I'm on 50mg and that plus trileptal (which the doctors now are not sure why I'm on it cause I was given it in rehab for my RLS ) works for me but definitely getting vivid dreams to but all in all trazadone suffices.

Hahaha I love bluelight. I'll give you my negative experience. It made me feel weird and I couldn't sleep.

OP: Glad to hear you had good luck with trazadone. Mirtazepine really is a good AD by the way as far as side effects go.

When I was in detox they gave me 50mg of trazadone for sleep. It worked well to get me to sleep but made my RLS act up pretty bad when I woke up the next day. I still took it though cuz insomnia is a bitch and I needed the sleep when detoxing

I miss trazadone. Had it Rx'd 3years back when on Prozac and a bit restless; best sleep I ever had. Lost that Rx when Prozac stopped working and I got moved to bipolar/anti-psychotics.

4 months ago when I started waking up at 4:oclock every morning. Quitting cannabis now so I've started taking melatonin nightly .. helps me fall asleep, not stay asleep, but the dreamscapes are amazing. Makes me wish I could sleep twice as much.

After years of doctors pushing sleeping tablets, one doctor said, "Anyone suggested Trazadone?" Nobody had so I gave it a go, and it cured my insomnia, but it left me cardio trouble so I had to stop taking it. Ashwagandha has had the same benefit though, and it's much better for me.

Low dose mirtazapine gave me the most lucid, spiritual dreams I've ever had in my life, but left me feeling dead during the day. Such a shame.

Trazadone felt pretty good I used to take 150 Mgs a night after I got out of detox and while I was in detox they gave me that and it was enough to make me sleep without anything else staying asleep could still be difficult but they gave me more when I woke up along with calcium magnesium pills and clonadine. 150 mgs was always the magic number for sleeping for me.
Its also a anti depressant at one point I was taking it 50 mgs in the mornings when I used it as a anti depressant and it did make me feel better.
After a while of taking it every night i started to wake up in the morning and be hanging onto the bed while it felt like I was spinning so bad I would eventually puke so I don't think taking it everyday is very good for some people. I told my doctor and she said that's strange let me know if it persists when you stop and sure enough it did so we figure it was the trazadone but now the last time I was in detox they started me on suboxone and I got stable on that in there until I could meet a doctor at the local methadone/suboxone clinic( you get in 10 times as fast when referred from detox) so I don't need trazadone its a good drug tho I'll always ask for that if I get a period of insomnia or anything it works good and isn't habit forming like other sleeping pills are.
