Well, it's saturday morning at 4am. Should I stay up till the sun rises and sleep early tonight, pass out now, or stay up and take 1-2 short naps in the day? Any other sleep tricks?

There are a few things I want to get done, but I have no obligations.

P.S. One trick that works for sure is that in the morning you get more energy because your body knows that its day again.

Sleep hygiene is important, this means, don't do anything but sleep (or have sex/masturbate) in your bed. Otherwise, you won't feel like sleeping in your bed, especially if you spend a lot of the time in bed (eating, watching TV, doing stuff, on the computer etc.)

Have you tried antihistamines (like, but not limited to, benadryl)?

Are you physically active during the day? Do you exercise regularly? Do you have an alarm clock?

^ good advice.. that's exactly what my psychiatrist told me about helping my sleep habits..
but unfortunately i still needed to get on ambien.
but like CH said try antihistamines, they work for a lot of people.. if benadryl doesn't work for you, try doxylamine succinate (sp?).
Or if you're into using herbs or natural things.. melatonin and valerian root are good starts also.

you may just write this off, most people do, but it's a true story.

i've had many problems with insomnia over the years, that i would handle with drugs, or just not sleeping. in 2005, i spent 4-5 weeks awake (no shit), without using any sort of stimulant(other than coffee during the day). to the opposite, i would smoke as much pot as possible, or drink as much as i could, opiates, physical exertion, valerian, kava, benzos. none of this worked to do anything but make me less in touch with reality.(as if sleep deprivation wasn't enough).

eventually, i learned some methods to put myself to sleep. as captain said, bed hygiene is important. if you only sleep in your bed, then your body will sleep when it's in the bed. you CAN program your own unconscious/autonomic system. through meditative/trance methods, i was able to clear my mind enough that i could at least lay down and peace out for an hour or so. working more with my successes, i've reached the point that i can sleep almost whenever i want. my current challenge is dealing with the restless body. ('get up! jump! you're not allowed to sit still!')

i really can't offer techniques for you, but there's the road to the goal. after these years of work, i've come to a good state with it. i've been able to take 30 mg. adderal and go to sleep 15 min. later. (i sleep great, and wake up ready to go! it's actually pretty cool.) the flipside of this has offered the ability to always have that push when it's needed.

i would always push, if you're doing days on end, cat nap, cat nap, cat nap. it may not seem so much, but your body will thank you for it.

The way I do it is to get as much sleep as possible, as soon as possible. I cannot stand walking around like a sleep-deprived zombie, thus my approach...

Sleep deprivation utter hell, yet I continue to stay up all night every few days, despite knowing better, since I have Adderall. It is so so so difficult to "give up" and go to bed when you are doing something cool or making progress on a task. Indeed sleep is very important.

I cannot sleep on amphetamines unless I am sleep deprived from the previous day. In my experience, a small dose of any benzo will cause a magic "reversal" of the stim effects (as opposed to just a masking). This is very nice for trying to get to sleep.

This is great advice, your body needs too associate the bed with sleep. You can read about this in a psychology book. However my husband puts shit on that's super boring when you're tired.. History channel with monotone voice.. Shit about physics ect. He watches this stuff in the day but at night it will help put him down. Also baked potatos are considered the worlds largest sleeping pill.. Valerian root or even melatonin might help. Also try to make your room as comfy and relaxing as possible. Good luck I know insomnia is a bitch.

Not sleeping sucks. Starts relapses for me. Once I get clean from fent or other opiates, I can't sleep for a week. I always try to stay awake all day so I can be so tired as to sleep the next night. Doesn't work for me but it may take 4-7 days for my body to re-regulate.

I've been an insomniac my whole life, I take ambien almost every night and honestly it's the only thing that has consistently worked for me and I've tried everything. Being sleep deprived all the time is hell. The above advice about only using your bed for sleep sounds like something I should try, I can't rely on the ambien forever. I can't ever fall asleep before four am, even if I didn't sleep the night before, I've been this way forever even when I was a kid. If I worked a normal 9-5 job for a living I would never get any rest!
