hello. I'm not sure how to post. (I hope this is a good place) I used to take 2mg (sometimes 3/4mg) of Xanax daily or every other day in 2013/2014 mixed with a lot of beers to "party" dayrage or nightlife or both. (good times) I stopped taking the bars in late 2014 and haven't touched them since. I didn't get any withdrawal symptoms once I stopped taking them. I smoked a lot of weed because that was my drug of choice. smoked daily high thc since 2009. (I told myself fuck Xanax the herb is all I need) However since late 2015 early 2016 I am getting very severe anxiety and nausea that I NEVER had before. I cant fly on airplanes or take long car trips or do HALF the things I used to do. I cant even smoke my pot anymore. I have been anti big pharma and anti pills since I stopped taking the bars. is the Xanax I used to take in highschool causing these problems now? Again I felt none of the usual withdrawal symptoms from benzos when I stopped and basically went from taking them everyday to few times a week to none at all. (drank everytime I took them) I find it odd I'm starting to feel like this years after8(

I do not think there is any chance the use in high school is causing this. I think you are just experiencing heightened anxiety for some reason. Chronic cannabis use can cause anxiety in many people and it can also amplify underlying anxiety.

Is there anything common about situations where your anxiety spikes?

I just overthink and overthink and become very sick to the point were im going to vomit. I still feel this way and i havent smoked in months. I thought the THC may have played a role but it always used to calm me or ease my stomach now its just the opposite.

The severe anxiety comes when im about to go to the airport or to a ballgame or concert, ect. (Things i used to do all the time) my mind is fucking with me hard.

I went to the doctor and they want to prescribe me benzos, the same thing i wanted to get away from in highschool. I feel like i need them to get through a day normal but dont want them. I just want my wake n bake and weed back:/

I've had stages of heavy smoking really causing me problems. How much do you smoke and how often? Weed is not as innocuous as we think. For me, when I have overused it I get a lot of anxiety, tension and nausea. I will sweat a lot, permanently hungry but too sick to want to eat. I've learned that I can smoke about .5g a day and be okay, any more and these physical issues arise.

Try and avoid wake and bake if you can.

I used to smoke everyday multiple times a day for about 4/5 years.. Go 2 school stoned/ work stoned/ play college basketball stoned... Never had a problem.. Its been a few months since I last smoked though i kinda quit (or as i like too say a long ass tolerance break lol)

What you are feeling isn't caused by the benzos (Xanax). Mental illness often presents in adolescence to young adulthood, and you may be developing an anxiety disorder. If you don't want to take the benzos (which incidentally make anxiety exponentially worse in long term use) consider getting a prescription for Inderal (propranolol). It's a non-addictive beta blocker that stops the adrenaline piece of anxiety so true physical symptoms don't present. It also lowers the mental piece of anxiety. I found it absolutely invaluable when I was having extreme anxiety. Unlike benzos, Inderal can be used for the long term. I also recommend you look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also recommend cutting caffeine and nicotine from your life (if you use them) and not using weed all day everyday...

CBT is the way to go. About ten years ago I did maybe 3-4 sessions with a therapist and she explained the idea of CBT to me. Its stayed with me as the only effective form of therapy I tried and I tried a lot. Understanding cognitive distortions can really change your life.

I know you said you're anti-pill but I've suffered anxiety all my life and Prozac has done wonders for me. It's an SSRI anti depressant. Non narcotic. There are others in that class or similar classes to try if Prozac doesn't work. CBT is good too. It would be good to start seeing a therapist and the therapist can determine if you would benefit from meds. I agree with the others that prior benzo use likely did not cause this. Especially since you've been off them nearly 2 years. Anxiety is a lot more common than people realize. Take care and good luck.

Thanks for the advice everyone.. I will look into CBT..

@neversickanymore I get a knot in my stomach and think about vomiting everywhere and picture myself doing it and it just makes it worse and worse

Quave2, it's not coming from nowhere. Anxiety never does. Sometimes it's a delayed reaction (usually from a traumatic event that a person can't cope with at the time), something bothering you more than you consciously know, and sometimes because of past trauma (PTSD catchall), and yes sometimes from emerging mental illness.
Nothing you've described (and you are correctly assessing yourself as overthinking, which is not helpful) is causing this level of anxiety but you're focused on drugs and injuries, which in itself is interesting.
Look, I wouldn't post my life story here either. If any of the things I mentioned click for you that's half the battle.
CBT isn't a pill. It takes discipline and it's not talk therapy. One way to describe it is a way to use on the rational parts of the brain to override the emotional ones. This is from a neurobiological perspective. The older parts of your brain are hardwired to respond with and to fear (mostly or we wouldn't be here ?). The rational parts evolved later. CBT is not going to help you in one session.
Point being if you are literally thinking yourself into a high anxiety state and don't want benzodiazepines short-term to calm down, try beta-blockers and start either CBT or talk therapy.
And I'm being blunt here, but big pharma didn't give you bars of xanax and advise washing them down with beer. Nor did they (and boy did they not) advise smoking a ton of weed. That was you. Meds are a necessary part of life for most people at some point, like when they have cancer.
Meditation, yoga, herbalism, homeopathy and some good breathing exercises depending on how much of a hippy you are should help too.

Are you having panic attacks? Or is it more of an intense, but general anxiety? Were you diagnosed?

Therapy helps, too.

I hope you feel better. Anxiety is uncomfortable but it isn't harmful.

Sometimes people develop IBS, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, when they have anxiety. That can cause nausea.

Not giving medical advice. Just my experience. Getting a physical and telling your GP about what's going on may be prudent.
