Hello bluelighters

This question was always in my head:

Why does clozapine is the first choice medication to treat suicidal behavior in schizohrenia? How does it differ from other anti-psychotics in this particuar point?

Does anyone knows that?

Thanks :)

Looks like because in 2002 one of the uses the FDA approved it for was "treatment of suicidal behaviour in schizophrenic individuals." Most anti-psychotics/anti-depressants aren't specifically approved for treatment of suicidality, clozapine appears to be.

It also seems to be indicated for treatment resistant patients, probably more likely to be suicidal. So all around a psychiatrist looks through his big book of farms, and this sticks out as fitting the best.

But everyone's different, the only time in my life I've been suicidal was a week on anti-depressants. I never saw no' box with no black label, and apparently my stupid doctor didn't either. Don't let a GP prescribe you anti-depressants lol

I have prescribed Etumina (clotiapine freebase 40 mg.) That is sold in a few countries and I don't know why. It is extremely sedative, potently anxiolytic and strongly hypnotic. I prescribed 6 tablets per day wich are 240 mg. of clotiapine freebase

Have prescribed or were prescribed?
Some sources regard clotiapine as a typical antipsychotic rather than atypical due to its high incidence of extrapyramidal side effects compared to the atypicals like clozapine and quetiapine, to which it is structurally related.

I'd take the clozapine.
