Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN), the House anti-narcotics chairman, reacted strongly to the reporting on an illegal drug by ABC News anchorman Peter Jennings.

Souder responded to comments he read in the Palm Beach Post by Jennings last week regarding the popular mind-altering drug Ecstasy.

Jennings said he was concerned that claims by the U.S. government that Ecstasy is unsafe are exaggerated, causing young people to question any information provided in the future.

"Government is best when government is most honest, especially for the younger generation, which is more susceptible to trying drugs," Jennings remarked to the Palm Beach Post. "If they can't rely on the government for good and honest information, then government has lost something enormously valuable, which is people's belief in the government's credibility."

In a one-hour news special that aired last Thursday called "Peter Jennings Reporting: Ecstasy Rising," Jennings examined the government's futile record for slowing the distribution of the pills.

"This was an opportunity for us to look at whether or not the government isn't its own worst enemy in trying to control illegal drugs," Jennings explained to the Palm Beach Post regarding the show.

Promoting the benefits of Ecstasy rather than the dangers in his show, Jennings said he is not concerned at all that this will pique the interest of young people to try the illegal drug.

"It can't be a concern," Jennings said regarding young people wanting to try Ecstasy. "Our job is to lay out the facts."

Souder said he could not believe a well-known news anchor like Jennings would make such comments about a drug that has been banned in the United States since 1985.

"I'm outraged by the irresponsible comments that [Jennings] made in advance of its airing," Souder exclaimed. "Their appalling nature does not leave me optimistic about the veracity and good intentions of the 'production' he's touting."

Using his experience dealing with anti-narcotics issues in Congress, Souder said the research conducted by Jennings and ABC is severely flawed.

"Jennings exposes a great deal about his own selective research methods when he claims that the government's 'science was not good,'" Souder states. "Countless studies have proven that Ecstasy is far from a benign drug."

He added, "[R]eams of evidence demonstrate that Ecstasy causes brain damage and even death."

As for the carefree manner that Jennings conducted this program, Souder said the lack of a moral compass by the ABC news anchor is especially disturbing.

"If Jennings' nonchalant comments about this dangerous drug are indicative of the outlook of his 'special,' then he is misleading his viewers," Souder remarked. "To make matters worse, Jennings appears to have no moral qualms about offering the American public what the Palm Beach Post cast as 'a glossy, late-night infomercial.'"

Questioning the motives of Jennings' reporting of this story, Souder said Jennings needed to look into the subject further.

"Jennings somehow believes that his take on Ecstasy is tantamount to 'lay[ing] out the facts.' But how much does Jennings actually know about the facts?," Souder commented.

Providing an example of how Ecstasy has caused harm, Souder challenged Jennings to show the whole truth about the negative effects of Ecstasy to complete his story.

"In 2002, I heard testimony from the mother of 23-year-old Kelley Baker who died of an Ecstasy overdose," Souder noted. "Will Jennings' 'special' offer the facts about Ecstasy's effects on her young life?"

This article deserves it's own thread, it would just get lost in the mountains of posts in the original thread re: ABC's show.

"Ecstasy Promotion" ??? I knew it was just a matter of time. Since when telling the truth is a promotion ? Hasn't FED learned ANYTHING yet ?

Lying does not reduce demand for MDMA!

:p

a giant circus of lies, paranoia and misinformation, once again from the goverment. Like Iranian Ayatollahs desperately clinging to power, the u.s. chastises anyone with the audacity to question them, or their motives. Not to mention providing another example of why not to trust them.

As for the "[R]eams of evidence" Souder referred to, did he mean the study where some meth "accidentally" got labeled as MDMA?

I'm sooooo sick of people refering to the risk of death when talking about ecstasy. NSAIDS (aspirin type medications) kill more people in one year than ecstasy has killed.... ever. Tobbaco products kill thousands of times more people in 1 year than ecstasy has killed ..... ever. There are real risks but death isn't one of them

Well... since the LD50 for MDMA is around 106.5mg/kg of body weight... you gotta think that people that OD on MDMA are kinda askin for it.
I mean... think about it... ive had my crazy times... but even the THOUGHT of taking over 1000mg makes me shudder. And I would have to take OVER 8 TIMES THAT AMOUNT just to reach LD50. So really... unless your body has some strange reaction to mdma, it is highly unlikely that a person would OD. I dont even really see how its possible. I guess it is, since people have ODed... I just dont know how.

No but the facts could have saved Kelley Baker's life, especially if the gub'ment told the truth - plain fact - and didn't make everyone feel like a criminal for choosing to do what they like with their bodies. :X

...straightforward lying. its this shit that the report centered on, the government force feeding nothing but crap to us until it gets to the point where its hard not to laugh. no credibility at all

There have been very few deaths caused by MDMA alone. The vast majority of deaths that involve ecstasy are due to dehydration, overheating, over-hydration, or dangerous combinations of drugs and alcohol. MDMA, in and of itself in reasonable doses, taken in a safe setting and with knowledge of its effects on the body, isn't very dangerous when compared to say, Tylenol or Advil.

does anyone know the real story....what was really in her pill. she didn't die from a mdma od. she has bought a pill that was sold to her as E but it prob had dxm or something else. f@#k the media always putting bullshit into people heads i wish the real facts would come out in the open.

Well, thank God [insert name of america's fav. beer] doesn't cause brain damage, and thank God alcohol has never killed anyone, otherwise that'd make you a pretty big hypocrite.

hah... nice one.... yes... we all know the U.S. govt's drug policy has a few holes in some areas.

I love the U.S... and I love livin here... but jesus christ I wish the DEA and company would get their heads outta their asses. I often wonder if they believe the shit they constantly spout.... if theyve actually lied so much that they're in a state of pseudo-denial.

I knew someone that died from an overdose of Tylenol. Will we ever hear the facts about the effects of Tylenol on the hundreds of people that die from it every year, or will we only continue to see commercials about the 'benefits'???

I highly doubt that Kelly Baker ingested REAL ecstasy free from other drugs. If she did however, she probably died of dehydration or something along that line, because as nickss quoted...an overdose form E alone is highly unlikely.

I am glad though that something as big as Ecstasy "promotion" was aired on the nightly News with Jennings.

Peanuts kill more people each week than MDMA ever has.

Please don't think people. The government does this for you.

There, there. Calm down, drink your nice Budweiser and watch some nice sports! See? Everything;s OK now.

Obviously this guy didn't watch the show.

Even one of the last statements Jennings made was that there simply weren't enough studies out there to make any real conclusion and that nobody should take ecstasy believing it's safe because nobody knows yet.

The program in NO way promoted drug use. All it did was lay out the facts and say that the studies the government has been using by Dr. Ricaurte were wrong. That's entirely different than saying "yeah, go take ecstasy". Rather it's the same as when early studies indicated that only homosexuals and heroin addicts got HIV/AIDS then those studies had to be retracted when new studies proved the old ones were wrong and that anyone could contract HIV/AIDS.

Mark Souder is exactly why nobody has faith in the government and he's a disgrace to the nation for not even researching issues he wants to bring to a public forum as a member of our government.

"Jennings somehow believes that his take on Ecstasy is tantamount to 'lay[ing] out the facts.' But how much does Jennings actually know about the facts?," Souder commented.

Obviously a lot more than a propaganda-bitch like you.

maybe we should send him all the posts from here ?

or maybe a mod could get some FACTUAL INFORMATION and send it to him.

Is it just me, or do i see the US Government crumbling from multiple directions ... ie. Terror shit and Shrub , People now losing faith in government information, Canada going against pretty much everything US wants. *shrug*

i dont see canada going against what the US wants a sign of the US govt crumbling.... i think its a sign of canada finally getting some balls and standing up to us, as they shouldve done in the first place. I mean... its not like Canada is a province of the US... we should have very little control over their actions
