medicine cabinet said:i also remember back when i was in elementary school (this was the 80's btw) the school i went to sent out a letter warning parents of ppl giving out blue star LSD stickers and other stickers with pictures of micky mouse and shit on it. like there was some treacherous band of hippies dosing children in baltimore city.
i went to elementary school in the '70's, and i remember my dad giving my brother and me our first lecture at the dinner table about drugs. he said that if anyone ever offered us stickers or tattoos that you lick, to stay away from them, because they could be acid or PCP. and he said that if we ever were so tempted to smoke weed that we couldn't resist, to come to him first, so that he could be sure we got something safe. (since then, i've often wondered what he'd do if i called him on that one today, just to see if the hookup offer is still good

I don't mind the drug ed my kids receive in school. it's something i keep on top of, and make a point of asking what they're being told. and if it sounds like complete fear tactics, I try to explain in a non-influencial manner that there is an "other" side to the story. for example- when one of them came home with a weed project that outlined everthing negative possible, I asked if they covered any of the medicinal benefits which have been proven to be associated with it, such as glaucoma treatment or cancer pain, and sometimes even depression. he said "No, mom. They just want us to list the bad stuff; it's for school." So we had a frank discussion about how that's understandable, but that there are exceptions and situations that the school isn't going to go into which they should keep an open mind about, because most laws get passed based on the biased side which promotes fear.
maybe i'm naive, but being honest seems to work, because i have no worries about my kids so far. i know a lot can change in the next few years, though.
