Hi im new to this hole culture sort of thing, umm i've just been prescribed apo-escitalopram. For depression and anxiety Im just wondering if anyone has any usefull information or currently takes it and can just shed some genreal light on what to expect. thanks

it's just a general SSRI anti-depressant. brand name is lexapro. it works by releasing serotonin in the body to elevate mood. you will not get an instant mood elevation though, you have to take it chronically every day for 3-4 weeks to see any improvement in mood, and this is why there is no recreational value in this drug.

Hi..... I took Lexapro (escitalopram) for years and it helped but after a while it stopped working. One bad thing about it is the withdrawals ( after stopping it) I'm talking about withdrawals that last quite a long time. Google it and you will read some horror stories. But hey.... It might really work for you!

any drug that helps the body produce a neurotransmitter is going to also produce withdrawals symptoms once you stop it. SSRIs help the body produce serotonin, which elevates mood. if you stop the thing that helps the serotonin production, then you will suffer from basically the opposite of what it helps. so things like severe depression, apathy, suicidal thoughts, confusion, etc. are all withdrawal symptoms of SSRIs.

so they give it to me to stop feeling depressed, knowing ill be dependent on it, makes almost no sense. great.

I took it for a few years… I had a bit of side effects but it helped me get through grad school. I was able to foliow through on things. My withdrawals were there, but nothing like the addictive drugs I've been on when I stopped the medication. Everyone is different though and I wasn't on a high high dose. You may become dependent but it's different. You won't crave it or seek it out etc like instantaneous drugs as it takes a few weeks to work as folks mentioned (which might be obvious), but your usual symptoms will come back what you took it for, that's why doctors recommend therapy in conjunction with the medication. Not that the withdrawals won't be there still… :)

I just felt off for a few weeks when I quit.
