Al Gore's son charged with pot possession

Saturday, December 20, 2003 Posted: 10:28 PM EST (0328 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The son of former Vice President Al Gore was arrested Friday night on a marijuana possession charge after police stopped the car he was driving for not having its headlights on, according to a news release from the Montgomery County, Maryland, Department of Police Services.

Albert Gore III, 21, was behind the wheel of a Cadillac driving in downtown Bethesda at 11:30 p.m. EST Friday when it was spotted by a unit with the Montgomery County Police Holiday Task Force, the statement said.

After he pulled the car over, Officer Robert Cassels noticed all of its windows and the sunroof were opened despite the freezing temperature, and he "smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car," the statement said.

A search of the car found "a partial marijuana cigarette" and "a cardboard cigarette box with a baggie containing suspected marijuana," the police statement said.

In addition to Gore, police charged two male passengers in the car with a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana. The three were released from jail, pending trial.

Gore, a Harvard University student, has had previous brushes with the law. He was ticketed for reckless driving by North Carolina police in August 2000 when he was clocked going 94 mph. Military police arrested him for drunk driving near a military base in Virginia in September 2002.

I know a couple of kids who went to school with him or mingled in social circles with him. Apparently he's a bigger druggie than many of us on here.

Just look at that kid! Hahahahaha!

hes a ugly mofo. if al gore is president you think he will push for legalization?

Obviously not.....Do you guys remember that his wife Tipper Gore was behind the PMRC movement that contented that Rock music was a bad influence on kids?????

No mainstream politician will support legalizing pot, I think....

of course that kid smokes pot.. wouldn't you want something to numb the pain of thinking "damnit, i'm the son of the man who most voters wanted to be president and i still can't get laid!" :)

looks like the kind of kid i would talk shit to just for the hell of it....then again i dont think ive EVER met ANYONE who looked quite like that...honestly...it must just be cuz where im from...

Actually when Time Magizine, the New York Times (very liberal paper), and the Washinton Times counted all of Florida's ballots (not just the contested counties as ordered by the US Supreme Court, but they counted ALL counties) sometime in Mid 2001, they still found that Bush had more votes than Algore.

Now I don't think they counted the overseas military vote, which I don't think was ever properly counted. But the military doesn't traditionally vote for Democrats anyway (which is why the Democrats didn't want those votes counted and they were not), especially not for Algore that was VP in an administration that raped the military.

The more I think about it, the more I realize this can be just about any Joe Schmo getting caught. But then again, most Joe Schmos know to PUT THEIR FUCKIN HEADLIGHTS ON!

^^I've ridden with people who forgot too, I just don't get it. You think you'd notice, even if stoned, that you can't really see.
With my car at least, if I can't see the instrument panel I know my headlights must be off .. although I must admit the damn DRL trick me sometimes :X

UPDATE: Gore's son must enter substance abuse program

Al Gore's Son Must Enter Substance Abuse Program For Pot Charge

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Albert Gore III will have to complete a substance abuse program under an agreement approved Monday by a judge presiding over a marijuana possession case against the son of former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee Al Gore.

Montgomery County District Court Judge Mary McCormick put Albert Gore III's case on an inactive docket for a year, at which point the case will be dropped if Gore meets certain requirements.

Those include submitting to 12 weeks of urine testing, community service and substance abuse counseling sessions. Gore also can't have a criminal conviction during that year.

Gore, who did not comment after the brief hearing, was accompanied by his mother, Tipper Gore, who did not comment other than saying the issue was a "private matter."

A student at Harvard University, Gore, 21, was arrested Dec. 19, 2003 in Bethesda after an officer pulled him over for driving a Cadillac without its headlights on. The officer smelled marijuana and noticed the windows of the car were open despite frigid temperatures.

A search of the Cadillac turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box with suspected marijuana in it and a crushed soda can that smelled like marijuana.

Gore was charged with marijuana possession, as were the two passengers in the car, Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass. All three were released before trial.

Hordon and Kumin will also have their cases placed on the inactive docket and undergo the same treatment program as Gore, according to Montgomery County State's Attorney Douglas Gansler.

He said there was no favoritism shown Gore because of his family's political stature. The substance abuse diversion program is standard for first-time drug offenders, he said.

"Regardless of who the defendant is ... we treat them in the exact same way," Gansler said.

The younger Gore has been pulled over by police two other times in recent years. He was ticketed by military police in September 2002 outside Fort Myer in suburban Virginia for driving under the influence.

North Carolina police also cited Gore in the summer of 2000 for driving 97 mph in a 55-mph zone. Charges against him were dropped under an agreement with prosecutors, but he had to pay a $125 ticket and had his driving privileges suspended in the state.
