Opioids Afraid to sleep after dilaudid (hydromorphone)

I've looked through the forums and I couldn't find an answer specifically for this so I apologize if its already out there somewhere.

When I do dilaudids I feel good for a while then after about an hour or two I get incredibly drowsy. I know this is normal but I'm always terrified to go to sleep so I keep myself up or set an alarm to go off every 10 minutes so I don't fall into a deep sleep and risk not waking up.

I have a fairly high tolerance (I think), I can probably snort around 15-20mgs of dilaudid or so without becoming sick, but doing that much I worry about an overdose. I'm really small, I weigh about 100lbs. Even with a smaller dose, the drowsiness always freaks me out.

How do you know if its safe to go to sleep when your nodding and extremely drowsy? If I'm up for like 3-4 hours after doing them does that mean I'm fine and won't die in my sleep?
When I try and let myself sleep I'll usually start to fall asleep then my body will twitch and I'll wake up. Is this a sign of an overdose as its maybe the body trying to fight off dozing off for
good....? :?

Sorry for the long post, I've just really curious about this for a very long time and I'd also like to get some sleep after having a pleasant night :)

Hydromorphone has a relatively short half-life between 2-3 hours. Which means if you take 20 milligrams about 10 milligrams will be left after 2-3 hours. Depending on your tolerance you can assess whether 10 milligrams is a dose you can sleep on without posing a threat.

if you can take 15 -20mgs at once and be really high then just snort 10-14 mgs at once and be less high. It's really that simple. Then you dont have to be anxious about sleeping, Oding and plus you will have less of a habit. Im 6'2 200lbs and if i took what you do id od in about 2 seconds lol. Then again size has nothing to do with tolerance so even if you were bigger or gain weight dont think you can handle more drugs.. Just dont push your limits and you wont get hurt. Sadly some people never learn this.

Thanks Chromophobia! That was exactly the kind of answer I was looking for :)

And chrisalt, I do that much because my tolerance is that high so I don't really feel it if I do less. It's hard to gauge what's too much for your body when you don't really get as high since you can still OD :S I def need to cut back though lol I'm very aware that I'm going down a slippery slope.

If you're puking, danger

Snorting under 20mg of dilaudid and getting high is not considered really a high tolerance, dilaudid is notoriously weak unless IV'd, in which case it's stronger than heroin.

Just do a little less if you're scared. Setting alarms to wake up won't keep you from going under if you've OD'd

I don't like people telling me to slow down either but id say just try to wean and reduce your tolerance a little. If you wean slowly down to say 10-12mg then you can be more confident that you'll be able to nod out comfortably. You could also lower your tolerance by substituting higher doses with diphenhydramine (benadryl) only 25mg needed to potentiate the opiate sedation. Make sure not to take too much benadryl because anything over 50mg will ruin the high.
I have a few friends that have ODd on lower doses than that and they weigh more, but just like chrisalt said tolerance depends on the individual.
Lowering your tolerance is never a bad thing, I frequently try to reduce it with days off, sometimes weeks off. It may sound like impossible, but it saves $$ and makes lower doses feel better. And you won't have anxiety from taking higher doses. Sounds like a win on all accounts

Starlett - how are you doing?

I have wondered the same actually sometimes. When I've dosed a bit too much oxycodone I wonder if its safe to doze off. It feels like ill die in my sleep sometimes if I fall asleep so force myself to stay awake. How do you really know/can tell when you've done too much and you should try and stay awake for longer? And for how long should you stay awake for?

Relax! And don't worry so much about it. It sounds as if you have a solid awareness of your tolerance, and understand the extreme drowsiness is a common side effect of the drug. Hydromorphone has a very short half-life, so you shouldn't worry about falling asleep four hours after dosing. The twitch, or abrupt awakening is perhaps psychosomatic; a manifestation of your anxiety and reluctance to let yourself fall asleep? Or it could just be coincidence- I'm sure you've jerked awake (while falling asleep) sometime in the past without dilaudid. Either way, in the future I wouldn't worry so much about it, as long as you continue to responsible.
