Hello Americans, I've come to ask you a question. I hope you will be able to help. :)

I've just stopped smoking tobacco after 18 years (I started when I was 13) and I've found a bit of a problem as far as the old cannabis goes. The normal thing to do in Britain is to make joints using a mix of tobacco and weed, and it's very easy to make something that will smoke properly by using 50% tobacco.

As I understand it the normal thing to do with weed in the US is roll it into either a blunt (tobacco paper) or a standard white rolling paper with no tobacco. I'm trying with little success to make my weed-only joints stay lit for more than a second so I was wondering if there is any particular thing Americans do that I don't, like use a specific type of paper, use something else as a mixer instead of the tobacco or whatever.

It may well be that I'm just shit at rolling, it may be that I'm not packing enough weed in the paper (I'm a light weed user and it's potent stuff so it's nowhere near as full as a tobacco/weed one would be), it could be something else I haven't thought of.

Or should I just stop listening to what Snoop Doggy Dogg says and get a decent bong?

How much weed are you rolling in it? I always used ~ a gram when rolling a joint. I used e-z wider double wides rolling paper.

I would just get a bong if I were you, or get a bowl if you want something "on the go."

get a rolling machine...I have a zig zag one and the papes that fit in it, you can get the flavored ones too if you want but the ones that I have I normally have to cut because they don't fit into the rolling machine...

This is pretty much what I do and if I'm smoking it's joints only. The only difference being that my filter is usually shorter and fatter with more spirals happening and I typically just roll it in instead of jamming it in after. If it seems a little loose I just grab the end I'm gonna light and shake/snap it down toward the filter.

If your joint keeps going out it may be too tight. This could be because you're rolling against something like a table. Try and roll only with your hands as you really can't roll too tight that way and as a bonus you'll be able to roll anywhere. Either that or your product is a little too moist in which case I will store it in a wooden box or sometime I even microwave it a little.

zig zag one and a quarter is all the paper you should need IMO/E

Won't even get into the anger of ruining good marijuana with a cheap herb like tobacco.;) You need to use atleast .25gs to make a standard sized paper work IMO, though to roll pinner(small) joints you need to be pretty talented, atleast to get them nice. If your a bad roller just get a machine. It takes most factors out as long as you roll it not to tightly. Though I do always suggest bongs over joints!

Ive never understood that as i have maybe rolled 10 spliffs in my life. i just dont like mixing tobacco with my bud and i hit joints way different than i hit a cig. And there isnt really a trick to using just bud just roll it make sure it has some air to breathe as in not too tight and try and make it even in terms of amount of bud all the way the length of the joint.

if it wont stay lit then try leaving your weed out of the bag for a few hours, let it dry out a bit n you'll be fine, tho i will say only the stickiest buds have i had that just WOULD NOT cherry n stay lit

Make sure you break the weed up fine enough (clumpy weed never stays lit just makes the joint go out or fall apart), maybe use a grinder and then make sure not to roll the joint too tight. Not to sound like a broken record, but when I first started rolling I always rolled them WAY too tight because I was trying to make the "perfect" joint. Didn't realize you just have to do like JB said and gently roll them in your fingertips. It's supposed to feel a little loose, not so much that the weed falls out but you do need to have airflow as well. I also just use the standard zig-zag 1 1/4s

What he said^ I always tried to use either notecard or in a pinch, part of the package the papers come in rolled up into a spiral, as a little end tip which helps give your joint a good shape when rolling and allows you to hit it until you smoke all the weed instead of being left with a roach that you don't know what to do with and is unsmokable unless you have a pipe or something.

I find the best way to break up some kind buds is to use a grinder (with a keef catcher, sorry if I misspelled) This way buds are broken up really well. I used to roll a lot of joints in my time and I was even able to roll really small pincers, I mean with just a half bowl of weed, a couple hits and gone. I used to have friends who wanted to sell joints have me roll them, because I can roll joints really small, haha. Anyways, I always used zig zags, they are really the best papers I believe. So good luck with rolling. Check out some high times magazines, they used to have how to roll articles a very long time ago.

JB hit it on its head..either your rolling too tight or your bud might be a little too fresh and just compresses and sticks together...always use 1.25 papers cause the 1.5 are just too much paper..you dont need a gram like tommy said just .2 will do if you smokin by yourself(call it a pinner)or one of those stupid cig/joint rollers that cap said..just get a pack of papers and practice, thats the good thing you get like 50 or 75 papers in a pack, so if its too tight break it open and reroll..

what i always found to be the biggest key when rolling a joint or a blunt is making sure the bud is even in the paper..and the way you start is by getting a grinder first, cause that breakes the weed up evenely so then it burns evenly, from that you wanna lay the bud evenly in the paper or blunt and by doin that you drastically improve your chances of smoking something that doesnt run..which in a joint "the runs" is the worst thing possible cause your just wasting weed..if its too tight you can reroll but if it runs the joint is already burning and if you dont catch it early it can fuck up the whole joint and waste the weed..

another trick for a joint thats too tight is to take a pin and just slide it threw the end your gonna light so that you make a little space for air to get down..just becareful cause you dont want to poke the paper and have a hole..and if that doesnt work then maybe the mouthpiece is too tight and you may need to bite the end off..i dunno i can always tell just by pulling on the joint/blunt when its not lit to see if its too tight and of you smoke and roll enough you will too

but if your wondering if you should just get a bong instead. hell yes you should..you dont have to buy a nice $300 one like i have, you can buy a $40 acrylic bong and it will get the job done but if you can afford it, ALWAYS GET GLASS...the bong though will end up paying for itself cause you will conserve so much weed..instead of smoking a whole joint you can take one rip out of the bong and be justr as high or higher..i will say its a completly differnt high then smoking joints/blunts.. i personally never smoke joints unless i have too cause they just burn too fast for my liking and they stink up your hands/car whatever with that hippy "pot" smell, i also hate smoking them with more then 1 person cause thats when the joint starts to get fucked up cause every one pulls differntly on it and thats what creates runs..ill always roll a blunt if i want to smoke like that or if im with a few people, if im by myself ill still roll up a blunt but ill smoke only half of it or if its thje first smoke of the day and i got vegas or dutchies, i only need like 1/3 of it cause they burn so slow..if we got a little weed then ill smoke the bong, if im tryin to get high but not blown then i will bust out my pipe or chillum...sure papers let you taste the weed the best, i just dont like them...but like i said smoking blunts/joints compared to bongs compared to pipes, they are all differnt highs respectivly..oh throw in vapes too thats another high thats differnt

and i dont smoke tobacco, so i dont know how people roll spliffs like that..it would prolly make me throw up...sorry for the rant but im a weed head even more then a dope fiend..if i had to choose dope for the rest of my life or weed and i could never go back..i would choose weed hands down

As it happens I've got a friend who lived in the US for years so I asked him what they do before I saw the replies to this thread. It seems we've both got things we can learn from each other.

Smoking tobacco and weed together is a bad idea. Some time ago a psychedelic expert (some would say shaman, but I think that's incorrect for several reasons) told me that tobacco "closes yoour third eye". At the time I had heard the term "third eye" but didn't exactly understand it. Having since smoked DMT it makes a lot more sense and I believe what he said was true. Also I've read some things about American Indians that say they used to use tobacco to come down off intense trips.

If you smoke weed and tobacco together it makes you very tired, personally I put this down to the carbon monoxide in tobacco combined with the psychedlic properties of weed, but I could be wrong. Weed on its own does not make you tired as all Americans doubtless already now, but us poor Brits do it as a matter of course, possibly due to the hideous soapbar resin that was the norm until fifteen or so years ago.

What my friend told me was that Americans tend to prepare three or so blunts before they go out, and smoke each one in a very short space of time at strategic points in the evening. This has the effect of making each blunt feel like a pretty hard hit from the weed cannon (by contrast British people sit around eating biscuits and falling asleep over a large number of tobacco-mixed spliffs in somebody's living room). A pure weed spliff needs to be smoked fast due to how quickly it burns, a mixed spliff will burn at a very pleasant and leisurely pace.

The one thing my friend told me is that Americans don't use roaches, i.e. a small cardboard tube that strengthens the roll-up and stops it burning too close to your fingers.

As somebody who is not especially tolerant of weed, I've found that using a single size blue ZigZag (Rizlas are the most brand common in Britain but they burn very badly compared to ZigZags) with half its length taken up by the roach and half by the weed works very well indeed. But as I say I'm a lightweight so you may want to use a bigger rolling paper than me.

But for Americans the advice is definitely to make a roach at least an inch long as it will save you wasting you weed and make it easier to smoke. Typically we British rip bits off the packet of papers to make our roach, but flyers/leaflets for nightclubs work just as well.

Weed makes me tired...

and while not everyone does, I usually tend to put a piece of the packet in the end of my joint as a a filter/ roach as you mentioned so I don't waste weed or have to smoke some stupid roach that's 2mm long, and I know many people who do the same.

My joints sure aren't 10 inches long, that sounds more like a blunt which is typically rolled with the outer tobacco leaf from a cigar. I don't really enjoy blunts for the same reason I'm not a fan of spliffs, I'm not into smoking tobacco with my weed. And this comes from someone who smokes cigarettes, I just don't like mixing the two. But yes, a lot of people like to roll big blunts, usually more of the thing to do with a larger smoking group or at a party or in a car packed with people, anywhere where you'd want a lot of weed to smoke at one sitting that will last more than a few hits.

tobacco is a very important tool for lots of shamans, north and south american included

just saying

im not saying whther or not it opens or closes the third eye, im just saying many many shamans use tobacco as a tool for given purposes

Weird because in the US a roach is the little bit of the joint/blunt that is crushed out at the end of the session. Usually what's left over after the joint is deemed too small to smoke is called the roach. I think more and more Americans do use filters (roaches) as it does let you smoke the whole thing and IMO makes for a better smoke especially if the weed is really dense. I always roll my MJ only joints with a filter/roach.

I'd like to add that when weed is not being well flushed by the growers (still has fertilizers in it) it can sometime give buds that won't stay lit. In my city, most of the weed you'll find is shit like that and even if it's cracker dry and that you roll it perfectly, it's still gonna burn like shit and you'll have to keep lighting it over and over. Most of the idiots in my area don't even notice this cause they all smoke it with tobacco. Also, look closely if the ash of your weed burns black instead of grey as it can also be a sign of a shitty flush job.
