Since swine flu has shut down Mexico we are now going to Belize, Guatemala and El Salvador. If you have any tips/advice/places to go in these countries please share. Thanks! In particular need ideas for El Salvador, it is really hard to find information on where to go here... lol

Hi everyone, I'm a 23 year old Aussie guy going to Mexico in a few weeks with my friend and wondering if anyone has any advice.

We're starting in Mexico city and then heading to Acapulco and then further south to spend a few days in Guatemala, then back into Mexico and continue until we hit Cancun for the last few days of our trip... we have more destinations planned along the way, but this is the basic route we're taking.

We'll be there for right on a month.

So does anyone who's been before/lives there have any advice or suggestions on places we have to see, things we have to do etc?

Not sure if it's against the rules to ask about the safest ways to buy drugs in these areas, but if it isn't then please fill me in on that too... lol

You might want to rethink your trip..Have you been watching the world news? Lots of sick people in Mexico City right now, everything's closed. Won't be much of a vacation if you get swine flu :(

Such bad timing... we're changing our destination because everything is closed in Mexico until May 6th, and we don't want to risk getting there and everything staying shut... and if it's closed now I doubt many people would be staying...

Anyone have any ideas for where to go in Central or South America?

try belize for in central america. its ya only english speaking nation in central america. been there numerous times. mayan ruins lotsa cave systems. dont set nothing down and turn ya back it will be stole in a second

We're probably thinking something like Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras... anyone know good areas for backpackers in these countries?

It's annoying having to change at the last minute, but I think Central America looks pretty fkn wicked anyway, maybe even better than Mexico...

Have most of Belize/Guatemala planned out... spending most of our time on Caye Caulker in Belize, and then Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, with a few other areas planned.

Have nothing planned for El Salvador, will be looking at that tonight... decided against Honduras as we only wanted to go to the Bay of Islands there anyway

i have spent many of nights in caye caulker. try and check out some of the blueholes. the locals will say the have no bottom with a creature dwelling deep within. most are usually going into a mountain with well lite-up caves you can swim in. i think you will really enjoy your trip to belize.

I've been to both El Salvador and Guatemala. El Salvador wasn't anything special. The only thing I can think of is the San Salvador volcano, which is pretty cool. The beaches are alright, I highly suggest you try conchas negras if you go to the beach. They're pretty good. In Guatemala, I've only been to Antigua but I highly suggest checking it out. The architecture of the city is nice. Oh, and get Moza Bock Beer when you're in Guatemala. It's really good.

Thanks, El Salvador still isn't really planned out, we're gonna head to Santa Ana for a few days then travel along the coast down to La Libertad probably...

Flying out tomorrow so if you have any more tips be fast! Don't think I'll have time to check this after I leave
