Addiction Explained in 5 min.

I watched this video awhile back, it's very informative!
It does sum it up pretty well and clearly!

Yes, my son has actually forwarded to me as a part of his studies. It's pretty basic and informative, except that I don't think diamorphine or medical heroin is used in hospitals anymore. Instead, There're stronger and milder versions of morphine.

Yes, in the UK, hospitals do administer heroin in certain circumstances. Not in the USA though.

I do think isolation has a big part to play in the development of addiction, but I don't think all addicts are socially isolated or in a harsh environment.

Famous people who are wealthy, living in luxurious surroundings and cared for by teams of people who idolise them still become addicts.

I don't think addiction can be simplified, it is a complex matter with many different theories.

It can't be explained in just 5 minutes.

I think humans try to complicate everything because we are an emotional animal. Take the ego out of the equation and a simple solution can typically be derived from research. Addiction is complex because we make it complex. This does not account for the known genetic component which can play a major factor for the predisposed. My mother has drank/smoked cigarettes everyday since she was 21. My father has smoked marijuana everyday since he was 15. My older brother has been admitted to a rehab facilities for opiate addiction every 2 years since he was 16. He is now 35. This is the best video I have seen that is short and sweet. I think most famous people have an addictive personality and is what draws them to seek all of that attention in the first place. They have higher substance abuse rates and are filling a void.

I think your comment represents some but not all addicts.

Some addicts are patients in chronic pain/anxiety who inadvertently get hooked on prescribed opiates or benzos. Others are suffering from mental problems and trying to self-medicate. About 10% of the population are born with unnaturally low levels of dopamine, and these people are predisposed to addiction, regardless of their level of social isolation. Peer pressure from friends who are addicts can also lead to to otherwise healthy people becoming addicted. As I have already mentioned, there are plenty of celebrity addicts who are not at all socially isolated. Prisons are full of addicts, primarily because it offers some relief from a miserable situation. Furthermore, the genetic component that you mention has little to do with the video's theory about social isolation being the key factor.

It isn't complex because we make it complex, it is complex because there many factors at play and many different types of addict. The social isolation theory is but one of many, and new theories are emerging all the time.
