this is a bit of a shot in the dark..

but wondering if anyone out there knows a good psychiatrist in toronto. i have been through a slew of mediocre therapists, and am at a point where I really need someone good: wise, intuitive, challenging, real, directive... no BS. and not a pill-pusher.

i guess the catch is i DON'T want medication. yet I cannot afford to pay for a therapist so need someone covered by OHIP. realize this is hard to find. don't mind going on a waitlist.

thanks.

I believe you need to get into your doctor (do you have a family doctor? if not, start going to the same walk-in clinic regularly) and they need to refer you.

Sadly Psychiatrists are only good for giving out meds. If you want actual talk therapy and any other coping mechanisms you are far better off looking for a Psychologist or a Psychiatrist who is trained is Psychology which are very fucking rare in my experience. Otherwise you are just going to have meds thrown at you and told to come back in a few weeks. I personally got so sick of Psychiatrists being useless cunts that they caused me more stress then they where worth and i damn near punched out my last one for being a ignorant, useless cunt who did nothing but ignore me, act like the upper class twat that he was and tried to fuck with my meds. I never went back to him after that as it is not worth going to Prison for Aggravated assault over some quack. I just can't stand those types.

Unfortunately alot of government medical care plans including MCP here in Newfoundland don't cover Psychologists so you have to pay out of pocket. I am not sure if OHIP covers them but i would look into it if you want to go that route for sure.

Some therapists do offer sliding scales... so it's more expensive for those who have insurance. Honestly though, insurance doesn't cover a ton. I get $600 in therapy per year (this $600 is also supposed to cover some other things like physio and stuff). So that basically gives me six sessions - on a weekly basis, it covers a month and a half.

Check out Psychology Today, it has some good information and reviews and often says the costs.
