REUTERS - Four children, including a baby girl, were among 71 migrants found dead in a truck on an Austrian highway and three people have been arrested in Hungary in connection with the tragedy, Austrian police said on Friday.

How fragile civilization really is. 71 dead because EU states are too busy arguing over which migrants ought to have the right to live.

yeah the situation is dire in Hungary due to the Balkan states doing little to control the flow. Keep in mind these migrants are just passing through Hungary en route to seeking asylum in Western Europe, so there is going to be a major reality check coming for states that think they can just treat these people like statistics while the border states have to deal with actual human beings.

thread title somehow got mixed up with a draft i had for a post in the testing forum :X

Of the 71 refugees dead, 59 were adult men. Why so few women or children amomgst the "refugees"? I don't see why Europe has an obligation to house, fed and cloth these asylum seekers. When you look at the youtube video it doesn't seem like they will adjust well to European culture.

We don't. But tell that to all the people who get emotional over one photo of a mum and her drowning baby, whilst simultaneously ignoring all the images of single young men, some armed, trying to get into the UK.

It's a tricky situation. I see both sides of the issue. Taking in these refugees is definitely a burden on individual societies. At the same time, those fleeing their countries are facing extreme difficulties and must be accounted for. The problem isn't going away and so something needs to be done. Assimilating large numbers of refugees is problematic and potentially destabilizing for those stable countries receiving them. I think a multi-pronged approach is needed for problems such as these, with stable countries letting in some numbers of refugees (a reasonable estimate of what they can reasonably process), with some effort put into resolving the conflicts at their source as well.

This is the approach of Slovakia...very sensible.

I understand that many immigrants to European countries that have had the wherewithal to leave their home countries do not assimilate well and only come to utilize the relative safety and benefits of the EU, but just saying we have no Mosques, how would they fit in seems rather shortsighted. Many of these people are utterly desparate to make a better life for themselves and are fleeing warzones. How can we assume that they wont fit in with European society?

Think of American immigration of Italians or Irishmen. There werent very many Roman Catholic churches here either, but they managed to assimilate over time and find the means to construct the facilities of their religious and cultural needs.

immigrants cause much, much more crime. it's not a race thing, most imigrants are - male, 15- to 35 years-old. these groups just tend to commit more crime.

and there are many qualified refugees, doctors, teachers, good-class working syrian refugees, you would be mad to not let those ones into your country. I think even USA are letting some in, like 10k.

What we don't want, is EU to get renamed Africa

71 innocent (yes, innocent - seeking asylum is not a crime) people die and people post shit like this ^

Truly sickening.

i was replying to the bbc article, I agree with you. Slovakia are only letting Christian refugees in.

And my off topic comment, thousands die in Africa daily. there needs to be another solution than to let them all into EU.

I wasnt attacking you personally, but the general sentiment.
Thousands die in every country every day...but not all are as avoidable as this. I think the situation is really sad.

i went off topic witth other related issues. yeah, you are right, this was totally avoidable.

almost all of these Syrians seeking asylum are qualified, good-working class, it's not like they will waste space in EU

Yep.

The traffickers are the criminals, asylum seekers are not criminals. Just because asylum seekers are not criminals does not mean states don't take measures to try and stop them from arriving on their territory, technically asylum seekers have to make it on to the states territory to seek asylum there. So whilst they are not actually breaking any law, they would have little chance of success if they did not pay people smugglers. It really is quite simple.

I cannot say what they were told or knew what was going on. But it is not out of the question to think they were deceived by a group of people willing to take advantage of them and commit the crime of trafficking, while still not having that or any other crime being their (the refugees) motive.
