hey there,

im on about 60-70mg valium a day for about a year.
what would be a good way to taper that dose to a zero and how fast can this be done without me feeling the benzo w/d's?

a quick taper plan by someone more knowledgeable would be super;)

thank You all in advance:)

taper 10% of the dose every 1-2 weeks. if you google the ashton manual, she has spreadsheets with schedules and doses for each time period.

I must be one of the wierd ones as i used to be on plenty of vs but never seemed to bother me when i ran out i just had to look again.
Probably the only drug i never had to taper from
but good enough advice from above ....
Though now thinkin back i may have been havin Wds cause i was sick all the time anyway so maybe i just couldnt tell...

That is a very high dose of valium, most people take 10 mg per day. Was this prescribed to you or are you using it illicitly?

Valium has a much longer half-life than other benzodiazepines, and its metabolites persist for much longer than others such as Xanax. Because you have been taking a high dose for an extended period of time, rapid taper would be dangerous (and unbearable) for you. I would recommend that you do this under the supervision of a physician.

i would lower it by 5mg every week, or 10mg every 2 weeks (for a fast taper)...
or 5mg every 2 weeks or 10mg/month (for a slower taper).
good luck.. and i do have experience tapering benzos.. im on a kpin taper as we speak :) .

That's like 3mg of Xanax or Klonopin. It is not a high dose at all I don't know why the above posters are freaking out. You hardly need to do much tapering and regardless of its long half life that helps there isn't really any seizure risk at that dose. If it is just for your comfort you could drop 5mg a day and be done with it in less than two weeks- that's being more than conservative. People tend to be over zealous with ridiculously long drawn out tapering plans for all substances, don't get crazy or let those examples mislead you- you only risk having to deal with your original anxiety again which would happen at any rate.

you think 3 months is a long taper???

im taking a year to taper off of 5mg kpin and 10mg phenazepam/day, im at 2.5mg of kpin right now.. but i have also been on benzos longer than a year, so it might be different for them.

I got off 3mg klonopin after years in about a week. You can do it longer but if you are worried and want it done fast just don't take anymore then keep your (lower, start with half and work up if needed) next dose on hand and wait it out until you feel WD then take it.

Can I ask of your experience with doing 60mg/d? How did it get to 60mg/d? What were the pros.. what did you get out of it, what were the cons, the side effects?

Assuming you can taper off successfully without too much issue

THIS, is actually exactly what i was going to say...

so....

good advice! lol, and i completely agree... I have done tapers on the 4 main benzos, and i find this method (more so the 5mg a week) to be very effective.....

I'd taper quite fast 10mg down a week but then at the end stay on 10mg for a month per day...then cut by 2.5mg per week, then stay on 2.5mg for 4 weeks and then completely stop and also don't imagine you will have withdrawals the first day u dont take any - you won't.

what the heck? how can some people get off benzos so easily? i tapered from 4 mg of xanax for 6 months and that was way too quick and im having horrible withdrawal from it still.

I would drop the initial dose by 20 mgs if you can. It is a lot easier to drop the dose when it is high, rather then towards the end when it is low.

I really don't think that you will have w.d. symptoms at 40 mgs/day, and if you do they would be minimal. This ends up knocking like 2 months off the taper, so it is really worth it.

From there, drop by 5mgs every 2 weeks, or 10 days if you can.

When you get down to 10mgs/day, I would drop 2mgs at a time instead of the 5, and then when you get to 4, drop by 1mg. I was prescribed the 2mg pills for taper so it made this easier, but you can make do with what you have.

Sorry to hear that. I got off 8mg a day bupe in a week too and people bitch about that one a lot. Fentanyl withdrawals are a whole different story for me this time around and I am having a hell of a time, so there must be some other factors going on.
