The setting could not have been more perfect. It was in the first week of a four-week camping tour of the American Southwest. My partner and I were camping a few miles from Sunset Crater, just outside of Flagstaff Arizona. We were on our own mountaintop in the National Forest, and there was not another soul around for miles. The evening was cool, and the stars were bright.
5-MeO-DMT is, in my prior experiences, perhaps one of the most awe inspiring and ‘spiritual’ entheogens I have used. Both of my previous trials with it (via smoking) were among the most significant and inspirational experiences of my life. I had never tried 5-MeO-DMT by the insufflation route, but I had heard many positive things about it. I chose a conservative dose, 16 mg, this being our first time with insufflating it. After the sun set, we enjoyed some marijuana and then took the powder.
Almost immediately, both of us felt a searing fiery pain in our nasal passages. We decided to retreat to our tent in an attempt to get more comfortable. It took a little less than ten minutes for the effects to begin. At first, there was simply a feeling of warmth in the body. Then, the warmth slowly turned into an entheogenic body vibration. Unfortunately, the pain from insufflation was not subsiding and it was very uncomfortable. In fact, it was the most intense burning that I had ever felt from insufflation of a psychedelic.
Within fifteen minutes or so, the state gradually began to resemble that of a mild 5-MeO-DMT trip, nearly a +2 on the Shulgin scale. My partner, who is a hardhead to psychedelics, reported much less of an effect than I, reaching only a +1 ½. There was little visual effect, however I did experience feelings of warmth and oneness with my surroundings, and my body vibrated with life. Despite the pleasurable sensations that I was feeling from this material, the searing pain in my nose made it nearly impossible to simply lay back and enjoy the experience. I attempted some deep breathing exercises in hopes of taking my mind off the discomfort, but it was of little help.
If it had not been for the burning discomfort that I felt, I could have left my body and had a full entheogenic experience, but the pain truly kept me from enjoying any of it. At one point, the pain was so bad I actually insufflated some water in an attempt to bring relief, again to no avail. Other than some brief moments of self-analysis and introspection, I never really got anything rewarding from the trip.
At approximately the forty-five minute point, the effects began to decline and I offered my partner a balloon of N2O. The balloon somehow picked up a static charge, because as she inhaled I saw sparks scurry about the outside of the balloon! I was under the incorrect impression at the time that nitrous oxide was quite flammable and it was rather disconcerting to see a possible accident in the making. I obviously was wrong as to the volatility of N2O, and it was a pity because I would have really enjoyed that balloon. Regardless, she enjoyed the N2O/5-MeO-DMT mix immensely, but I had to abstain due to fear that the night would end with an explosion.
Within an hour after taking in the snuff, we were mostly down. The afterglow was pleasant, but our noses were still in great pain. All in all, we were rather disappointed with this route. Besides the horrendous pain, I felt this method lacked something that was there when I smoked it in the past. There was never that all-encompassing, awe inspiring, mystical oneness that I associate with 5-MeO-DMT. Perhaps a higher dosage would prove to be much more interesting, but the pain I felt will keep me from ever trying this route again; I’ll stick with smoking it.

Great explanation of your trip. Too bad it didn't turn out how you wanted.
Do you think that an anaesthetic such as ketamine could help control the pain a bit?
Did the nitrious have any effect in dulling the pain while under the influence of it?
Are you sure nitrious is flammable?, I thought it wasn't. And the only reason it explodes (as in idiot kids blowing up mail boxes etc..) is because the gas is very compressed?
Anyways, thanks for posting. :)

:) Damn, I wish I had known, I really wanted that balloon! I was lead to believe that because N2O was used to power cars, it was flamable. Good to know it isn't.

I have a box right here now. Says Non-flammable Compressed Gas, but also says Oxidising agent.
Edit: Ok, had to fix the typos 3 times, shows you what I've just been inhaling :)

Oh, I never answered your question. Well, ketamine always burned the hell out of my nose too. It wouldn't work for me. As far as I know, it doesn't have any local anesthetic/numbing properties. Perhaps snorting some lidocaine would help.
And I asked her, and she didn't think that the N20 helped the pain at all. I don't know how the Indians did it, snorting several tablespoons of 5-MeO-DMT containing snuff at a time. That must have been fun.

Excellent report mgs.
Its too bad that the burn was so intense. It sounds like you were headed towards a quite profound experience.
How would you compare the effects smoking to insufflating. I had heard MUCH less intense, but I was wondering due to your first hand account what you could say about it.
Good job

It's hard to say, because my dosage was a little low. It felt like 5-MeO-DMT, only 'slower'. Obviously there wasn't the rush you get with smoking. I had a choice in the matter of where I would go with this trip. When I smoke the stuff, I feel like I am being shot out of a rocket ship and I have no control over any of it. That's how 5-MeO-DMT is supposed to be in my book.
Also, snorting it just didn't have that 'special' feel to it. I just felt like a trippy intoxication of sorts, but I really feel like that was related to the smaller dosage I took. There was never that mystical, 'spiritual' feel to it. Not recommended.

Nitrous is used in cars because it is an oxidizing agent. It adds more oxygen to the engine which gives it a little boost. Flame + O2 = Bigger Flame :) It's not flammable itself tho
