2010 Tour de France - Best annual international sporting event.

Anyone else pumped up for it? Who you going for? What team are you going for? Wonder if there will be scandals this year...

For me:

Rider: Fabian Cancellara
Team: Team Saxo Bank
Nationality:
17px-
Switzerland (my family ancestory)

Please don't let this be a TTYS Thread for me. This is a HUGE sporting event!

i spent a summer in london about 5 years ago and the people i was staying with were big fans of the tour. i started watching it in earnest when i realised there was a lot more strategy involved than simply being the fastest cyclist...

related reading: Le Tour de France!!

i'm not really close enough to it to root for a team or individual - i tend to enjoy it on a more holistic level. that said, i know he's getting on a bit but it would be supercool to see lance armstrong win in one more time...

Me too, or at least over the past three years I've been watching it. But this year I feel like I want to combine that with actually getting into the cheering aspect of it. So I figured what the hell and went with the best guy from my country-of-ancestory.

But I love the commentators and I love learning new things each year about France and the surrounding countries. For example, if not for the Tour, I would not have known that Kangaroos have lived in the wild in France (specifically in Émancé) since the 70's. Love the castles, the sunflower fields, the crazied fans...so much more than just a bicycle race.

woo :) le tour time again :)

BUT I NEED MY SLEEP NOW!!! *fuck*

I want someone to smack the arrogance out of Contador... prefereably with something large and damaging.

Big hopes this year for Michael Rogers to go really well and not get injured. Cadel may surprise. I wonder if the Schleck's will be up for it this time around?

Exciting :):)

Carnage on the cobbles.

Really not surprising.

Great to see Cadel get some time up on Contador and Lance. Suckas!!

This has been a supremely interesting start to le Tour this year. Usually the first few stages are relatively boring as people push their way around in the peloton and it comes down to a sprint. Not this year!!

Fuck me, Frank Schleck and Christian van de Velde out of the tour! This is MASSIVE. van de Velde is the leader of the Garmin team and was a serious tour contender (top 10 definitely, maybe top 5!). Frank Schleck going out will make Andy Schleck's job a hell of a lot harder. The amount of support that Frank supplies in the mountains is almost unmeasureable.

I predict that unless there are any more super dramatics that Cancellara will hold the yellow until the alps. Then he'll fall back as per usual.

Too early to make predictions about the overall winner, but I like that Cadel is getting himself into all the right positions!

Holy fuck.

I've just looked over the route for this years tour and fuck me the organisers are CUNTS!! I would not want to be riding this route!

They are riding up the Col de Tourmalet TWICE! I mean seriously guys! Once is enough! Once is in fact too much! That is a long and difficult climb, and to have them do it twice, once from each side. Assholes!

There is only one individual time trial this year (excluding the prologue) and it is the day after they've been up the Tourmalet the 2nd time, and is the 2nd last stage. As much as this route will be a cunt to ride, it is going to make fantastic viewing! This tour won't be over until the 2nd last stage!

Ya, this year's route is pretty insane. The amount of crashes and DNS's already is crazy.

Surprises me how much sportsmanship goes on in this race, though. The scene from the second stage where Cancellara basically said "the pellton is holding back so we can call come in together" for the greater good of a bunch of teams (including Saxo) was pretty amazing. Would have been totally different with the standings had they not made that mutal decision.

I'm watching a reply right now of stage 3 and it's crazy with the cobbles.

Ya, CB I remember Evans coming so close two tours ago. I hope he can at least pull a top 5 here. I think Cancellara might be up for working with Andy Schleck, though, as they are teammates. Saxo's a strong team, and despite Frank being in trouble, Andy will be okay IMO. It's basically going to come down to Saxo vs Astana for the teams. I don't think RadioShack and Lance have it in them to pull anything off this year.

^ Eh, maybe next time hide the stage winner for us who wait to see it after work here in the US. ;)

I've never seen so much Tour carnage as this year's so far. Its almost.....epic.

Stage 5

^ Well you could always....;)

Ah well for ANY person contriubuting to this thread, I will work with...

Pisses me off that Cavendish got it. I thought he was done for this year, I really did. I don't know exactly what it is about him, but he pisses me off. I wanted Thor to get a second stage win, maybe. And just from past years of racing...

Anyway, one more calm stage tomorrow and then everything goes into a frenzy. Cannot wait for the weekend!

I cannot wait for Stages 8 and 9. My guess is that the climbers will go kind of easy in 7 to save their legs for the weekend. The breakaway group of non-contenders will take the win (and probably the yellow) in 7, and then the real contenders come out in 8 and 9, making statements.

Astana

Wow, what a race today! Bbox Telecom effectively ripped off Cancerello/Saxo (perhaps unintentionally) and we got to see some great breakaways/chases. Props to the top 2 finishers.

With Astana ahead, I suspect we'll see Contador pushed to the front tomorrow. Maybe not a stage win, but close to Evans and Schleck for Yellow. I really want to see Saxo and Astana battle it our in further stages! Still a good start for Switzerland all-around :)

Ah fuck.

Cadel is basically gone. He raced all through that 2nd alps stage with a fractured elbow. Seriously. Fuck that!! That has got to muther-fucking hurt. He just couldn't go with the top riders today. That was seriously disappointing, but yeah, fractured elbow!! The fact that he made it through and only lost 8 minutes with a fractured elbow is crazy. However, it really looks like his tour is over. He can't win :(

That said it was good to see Andy Schleck and Contador go head to head today. Really fantastic to see the rivalry and competition :)

Guess im speaking for any Luxemburgish fellar out there (they r everywhere, even on BL ^_^), that the tour is THE sport event that you mustn't miss...
