Drug bin use questioned

MUSIC fans questioned the use of drug disposal bins at yesterday’s Rock-It festival in Joondalup after people were seen shaking the bins and having their photograph taken with them.
Concert-goers have told inmycommunity.com.au that many people treated the bins as a joke and also questioned their effectiveness.

One music fan said they saw people openly smoking cannabis and another showing off what appeared to be a tablet on his tongue.

Police said the three bins, which were placed at the concert’s main entrance in full view of officers, were used.

Commander Brian Cunningham said small amounts of cannabis, ecstasy and dexamphetamines were put in them.

He said just 10 people were charged with drug-related offences at Rock-It, a significantly smaller number than three previous music festivals police targeted this year.

Global Gathering saw 38 charged, Big Day Out more than 70 and Summadayze 160.

"We are certainly satisfied with some aspects of the drug bins," Commander Cunningham said.

"It was pleasing to see that the message that drugs were not welcome at the event and that they are dangerous seems to have been accepted in that nobody was treated for drug overdoses at the festival.

"What was disappointing was that some people chose to ignore the bins and were caught with drugs trying to get into the concert.

"We will be conducting an evaluation of the bins in consultation with the Drug and Alcohol Office and DrugARM, and have engaged an independent company to conduct a survey of people who attended the festival.

"We also plan to trial the bins at future music festivals."

Police said the 26,000-strong Rock-It crowd was well behaved.

St John Ambulance treated 270 people on the day for heat and alcohol-related injuries and illnesses, including broken bones.

A veteran concert-goer said he was concerned one punter was able to smuggle a flare into the venue and set it off.

He said it was the first time in 15 years of attending concerts in WA that he had seen a flare go off during a concert.

The drug bins were being trialled for the first time and come in the wake of the suspected ecstasy overdose death of 17-year-old Gemma Thoms at the Big Day Out more than a month ago.

Police said people would be able to place drugs into the bins without fear of prosecution.

:p That seems pretty far fetched in my opinion, I don't see the police looking for help from the public in picking up illigal drugs :p

Whats the back log like when the police test drugs? Does it take months for the test results to come back?

Ok and here is some more photos --->

Ahahahhaha those drug bins are actually bins lol someone said here they would be bolted down or soemthin. Wouldnt be hard to steal that lol

I'm confused how so many people on this board critisice these bins saying "what a joke" "we should steal the drugs" when this is a harm minimisation board and the government finally did something in the oppisite direction they are used to doing things and its treated in a useless manner by BL members , i mean come on and TRY be a little supportive it may be a small step but it has to start somewhere doesnt it ?

I agree.

It might not of been gone about in the right manner, but this is at least a step in the right direction. It could of been done better, by re-positioning the bins.. and having cops (with there dogs) further away from the bins to give people more incentive to drop there drugs into there without fear of the cops been a factor.

I'd rather them continue to trial this and make improvements too it, then not giving people an option and giving out criminal records to people who just want to enjoy 'themselves', or even worse have people scoff there drugs down because the only option is consume them or be convicted.

Great photos. All of this is pretty interesting given the Premier's opposition to the idea. Testing the drugs and releasing the forensic results is hardly going to be in his interests given he believes that "harm minimisation is a failure" :\

I think you'd be noticed wheeling one away.

Not if a few mates stand in front of it and id even take in an empty rubbish bin plus id shit in a plastic bag and put that in the bin for the sake of it and take the other one away lol Imagine the look of the cops when they find a big plastic bag full o shit (Heroin) loool

If you live near by iy might be worth while wheeling your own bin near by and trying your luck.

Just out there, if someone did steal the bin could they be done for only theft as they don't know whats inside the bin?

lol the images in my head of someone just wheeling the bin away makes me smile, although I have real doubts about how practival it is (stealing the bins)

Wonder if that is an idea for here in Qld??

Overheard one side of a mobile conversation at Future on Sat, "Dude just get past the front gate, there is only one cop car!" - had to giggle at that.

It is a step, but appears to be a knee jerk reaction to the death of Emma. Are there other steps in the WA police in harm reduction? Would be interesting to see the police's agenda/plan - were there tents set up in the festival for harm reduction, so people can find out unbiased info?

Nope but rather a knee jerk reaction, we have the complete opposite of a harm minimisation approach here, especially with the latest premier.

However incompetantly it was implemented, it's still a step forward for harm reduction.

he thinks harm minimisation is a failure??? has he even tried any form of harm minimisation? I dont think he even truly understands what that term means.

Mmm.. i think your right there. He's simply just saying what alot of the 'public' wants to hear.. i'd be surprised if he even thinks for himself on such matters. He's just another robot off the assembly line.

Howdy i have just removed some of the pictures in this thread, they are pics of people who are being searched within the event itself. i think that people need to see how invasive the searches are but unless people are willing to consent to having their photos splashed up here i think it might be a good idea to leave them out.

WA's Premier's idea of harm minimisation is "Just Say No"
