US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

can you cite any sources to back up your claims? to be frank I did ask if you had evidence to back up your claims but instead of presenting evidence you just made more claims without evidence to back them up
Oh give over, I'm not playing this game with you. It's common knowledge at this point, you don't need fucking sources if you actually live here. Just stop that alright, it's bullshit.

I don't think common knowledge is quite so common

Trump is currently doing a 180 on sending ICE to farms, hotels, and other businesses because the line he's been selling about immigrants is BS and the deportations are actually damaging the economy

so forgive me if I don't take the word of a random person on the internet at face value

I'll await sources and evidence before considering your claims

indeed.

"it's common knowledge" is a cop out and just screams lack of credibility.

if people want to be taken seriously, and are discussing in good faith, they jump at the chance to prove what they are saying is correct.

asking somebody to substantiate a claim is not bullshit. it's a perfectly reasonable request.

well, i typically don't just take news headlines at face value and assume they're true. i'm surprised to learn that you do.

it's absolutely fine - if you can't or won't substantiate your own claims, people will just draw their own conclusions.

Cop out lmao. You can literally just google for news headlines in the UK and EU countries over the past two decades.
news headlines are unfortunately not evidence nor is telling someone to google something

when I search for information I don't go to news stories, I look for studies and reports from government agencies with statistics and quantification so even if I do just google it I will come to a very different conclusion than you

so I would ask again, can you provide any sources for your claims?

You can't be this ridiculous. Like honestly man, I'm not even saying this to be hostile but you are genuinely being ridiculous. I mean I have name dropped two terrorist attacks that happened, both of which were conducted by the sons of first generation immigrants (Rwanda and Libya).

We're talking national, international news headlines here. Why you would even want to reach for government narrative on this topic is beyond me, given they are the ones facilitating the immigration and not stopping it. They are inherently and massively biased.

We've had successive governments for over a decade now saying "we'll stop the boats" coming over the channel, and nowt has been done. And you want to reach for their word on immigration? Give me a break.

What the hell does this even mean. You guys are being absolutely ridiculous.

I don't think its ridiculous to analyze information sources for bias nor to seek quantified sources in order to back up decisions and claims with evidence

do you think governments should base their decisions on news headlines?

The media has long been known as the fourth estate - serving as a check to the clergy, the nobility, and the commons (1st/2nd/3rd estate) in comprising the voices in a society. I do think there's something to be said about the importance of the role of journalism in analyzing and critiquing the party line of a government. We're seeing the media serve as a counterpoint to Trump's proposed medicaid cuts (demonstrating how unpopular they are even within MAGA) or highlighting the adverse effects that immigration enforcement is having on families, communities, and small businesses.

absolutely it is important but we do need to keep in mind that various media sources have varying degrees of bias and objectivity. we can't solely rely on individual news articles just like we can't rely on individual scientific studies. the preponderance of the evidence must be taken and analyzed with a goal of verifying information veracity

we have seen the media recently start backtracking on supporting Israel's genocide and instead of media reporting whatever Israel says verbatim journalists are finally starting to do journalism instead of stenography and call out the ethnic cleansing campaign for what it is

the role of the media is very important, I agree 100%, but while they have their own responsibility to conduct as unbiased journalism as they can, we as readers also have a responsibility to evaluate sources of information and the information itself. its part of our civil duty as participating members of society to be well informed about the issues we vote on

"Youtube is my source" Many maga proponents -- not even a channel just "YouTube". Scary how simple some ppl are. I'm sure some are that dumb on the left too I just don't hear from em

Well every peer reviewed scientific study involved reading and is done by woke scientists that don’t believe in Jesus…so you expect them to get information that involves reading data, graphs, and statistics, from scientists at places they hate like Harvard and Stanford and Berkeley (top 3 STEM institutions in the world)?

[EDITED BY TRYPTAKID, please make points respectfully, especially when referring to people you disagree with - thanks] and they realize it on some level because they are the losers in life digging ditches for dirt pay and not moving industry and science forward making into the mid six figures. They are too incredible immature to argue or reason with because they have zero humility and cannot say “I don’t understand” or “I’d like to learn”…..they already know it all because Joe Rogan told them.

[EDITED BY TRYPTAKID - see above]. This whole thing about compromising with them….fuck that. They need to be relegated to the gutter, ignored, ostracized, and marginalized. They deserve no say in anything.

And the fact that the majority of Americans or nearly half of them are like these people, makes me hate America. Not saying most places are much more evolved except for a few countries but we live in an underdeveloped country.

there's nothing ridiculous about simply asking somebody to substantiate a claim.

i think it's ridiculous that you think it's ridiculous :)

if you disagree, i'm happy to agree to disagree.

Hitchens' Razor
A philosophical statement, attributed to author and journalist Christopher Hitchens, that asserts: "What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence". It's an epistemological razor, a principle used to dismiss claims lacking supporting evidence. The burden of proof falls on the person making the claim, and if that burden isn't met, the claim is considered unfounded and can be rejected without further counter-arguments.

I've told you that the two aforementioned terrorist attacks were carried out by the sons of first generation immigrants (Rwanda and Libya). You can easily verify that for yourself if you don't want to take my word for it, why should I spend a few minutes of my life to satisfy your incredulity when you can just do it yourself. You're not my friends, I don't know either of you.

We're not talking the Sunday Mirror newspaper here, we're talking international headlines that were carried by the BBC for example. Of course they not unbiased, but we're talking base facts about significant events.. it's pretty clear cut whether the perpetrators were sons of first generation immigrants or not.

Now, if you asked me to substantiate the rumour that Keir Starmer was the man responsible (when not PM) for facilitating the immigration of the Southport attackers father into the country, when he was a known warlord involved in the Rwandan genocide.. then that would be very different entirely.

terrorist attacks from people who were born in the country and you're trying to blame immigration?

Are you trying to wind me up? Are you being deliberately obtuse? Yes, they were born here.. to first generation immigrant parents. Do you want me to walk you through that, or do you require some government sources on how to execute that logic?

Skip that, I'll save you the effort. These attacks wouldn't have happened if the attackers parents, who immigrated into the country, had not immigrated into the country because then the attackers would not have been born here. There. Do you understand?

no, actually I don't understand. you can say that about any domestic terrorist that if their parents/grandparents/whatever didn't come to the country it never would have happened

should the US start deporting all of the far right militias? the families of mass shooters?

what changes to immigration would have prevented this? were their parents criminals?
