US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

Trump's Commerce Secretary:

“Let's say Social Security didn't send out their checks this month. My mother-in-law, who's 94, she wouldn't call and complain. She just wouldn't. She'd think something got messed up and she'll get it next month, A fraudster always makes the loudest noise, screaming, yelling and complaining. Anybody who’s been in the payment system and the processes, who knows the easiest way to find the fraudster is to stop payments and listen, because whoever screams is the one stealing, Because my mother-in-law’s not calling, come on, your mother, 80-year-olds, 90-year-olds, they trust the government. And, if anyone has any trouble getting groceries due to the month without a check, well then let them eat cake”

OK. He did say all but the last sentence.
We still know where the pitchforks are.

Wow I cant believe he said that! The one who is going to call first is the person who doesn't even have a savings to fall back on. That is if they can figure out the automated telephone system to get through since, like you said, some are 90 years old. This is really sad government who really don't give a shit about anyone but themselves.

Some of the patients at the clinic I worked at didn’t even have the $1 they needed to get their medication until the first of the month. This attitude of "let them eat cake" is despicable.

Americans need to wake up fast before all our rights are gone.

they are gone already. They admin is blatantly breaking the law and ignoring judges left and right and nobody is left to enforce that law.

It’s already over, ppl just don’t want to admit that and keep going on like this is normal.

It was over before it started though. Americas checks and balances were not designed to be sufficient to withstand this apparently.

He's been in office for two months and our democracy is irrevocably destroyed? I don't believe that. But people need to pay attention to what is happening and stop thinking it can't happen to them. It is happening to them right now.

I believe it.

He rigged the 2020 election as evidenced by the fake elector convictions. You can bet your ass they are rigging the elections better in order to never lose again. they will do that out in the open and nobody will do anything about it just like all the laws being broken now.

What do you expect “the people” to do? His voters support this. They are fine with it. His opponents don’t control the military, game over.
 
Now he's threatening to send political adversaries "thugs" as he describes them - to 20 years in prison in El Salvador.



I don't know if he is either A) aware that this is what the nazis did and is either just doing the same thing or doesn't actually care, or B) doesn't actually realize that they did this kind of thing and is simply demonstrating how consistent his politics are with their philosophy.

And there we have it - the USA has it's own Siberia. Better, it's ouride US territory so no US protections appply.

It WILL be used to remove anyone who protests the ceaser or the oligachs.

And the lack of a focus on humanities moving forward means that very few young folks will read "One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

That said - I don't imagine there won't be lawsuits that may impact whether removing citizens from the US to serve sentences will be as widespread as it was in Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany. It's certainly possible, but that fight hasn't been lost - yet.

It will start with violent criminals. I've already heard Trumpers praising that. Then, it will be protestors at a level to where there is less public support. They've already demonized the college protests.



There was another protest at Tesla yesterday. A Trumper showed up with a sound system on top of his SUV and played Trumper music and talked trash through the amplifier.
One thing he kept repeating was, "Trump is going to send you all to El Salvador.".
There are plenty of folks eager to be Brown Shirts. This election really was about saving democracy.
 
That IS exactly what Donald Trump will do. The fact he preached sedition that resulted in a riot only to release the rioters from prison couldn't make it clearer that he sees certain groups within MAGA as his own personal extra-judicial punishment squads.

When someone protests peacefully, while he cannot LEALLY stop them, he is quite prepared to allow such groups to take matters into their own hands.

Face it - there will not be another free and fail election in the USA.

My next prediction is that he WILL attempt to have the ammendment to the US constitution only allowing a president to serve 2 terms struck down.

If the over 50% of the country that didn't vote for him stick together he cannot deport everyone.

I think post election people have been in shock and groping to find a way forward. I always like the title of the movie, "A Few Good Men." I know that a few good men have been able to shape destinies in the past and will again. It starts with us.

I have bad news - life isn't like a Hollywod movie.

One only has to read how Julius Ceaser was able to become a dictaror, you will note that Donald Trump is, in essence, doing exactly the same things.

It appears that it's possible for a democratic nation to become a dictatorship, rather more difficult to go the other way.

He's poisoned the judicery so he can rule by decree. He's openly courting extra-judicial punishment squads and in his way, has by proxy taken power from the national religion - just like Julias Ceaser.

The ONLY nation in a position to cripple the US economy overnight is Canada. If they simply stopped providing energy, it wouldn't result in people not having power - there just isn't enough for both private and industrial use. So EITHER Donald Trump allows the lights to go out so he can invade Canada OR industrial production would instanty fall by around 40%. But I think Canada is going to try rational argument. You cannot use rational argument against someone who is irrational. They only understand force.

If Canada is smart, they will 'suffer an unexpected problem' - a design flaw with the CANDU reactors that until checked requires them ALL to be put into cold storage. That's 14.6% of all power generation and an almost perfect fit in terms of going from having spare to having enough. That way they can get WEEKS of showing what the US what lack of Canadian power means without Donald Trump being able to complain. I know, it's a very underhanded thing to do - but fight fire with fire...

And nobody can do a god damn thing about it. I thought this is what the CIA and FBI were for. I guess I was wrong.

I’m pretty shocked that Biden didn’t put the appropriate guardrails in place in the CIA to prepare for a hostile take over like this that Trump spelled out in adcvance - but Biden is a fucking idiot that was more concerned with helping his son steal

The thing is, nothing has substantially changed within US law. It was always possible for a group to do this.

I keep telling people to read what Julius Ceaser did:

The ONLY law he changed was to restore the power of the Tribune of the Plebs to pardon anyone found guilty in court. He then had those loyal to him elected to the role (a political dead-end as it prevents that person from moving through the cursos honorum) by the simple expedient of bribing voters with unprescidented amounts of money (and threats to others seeking the role).

But it them put him in the position of forming alliences with future consols and after bribery to ensure his candidates got the roles, they could steal as much as they likely (JC getting a kickback) knowing that even when caught, he could use his power to get them pardoned.

Yes, there were many more events but at the end of the day, Julius Ceaser placed himself in a position where he could essentially allow his chosen patricians to make HIM vast amounts of money knowing that legally, nobody could touch them.

The thing to bear in mind is that the Tribune of the Plebs had become a real 'voice of the mob' job. The plebian assembly had been stripped of almost all of it's powers due to corruption - but JC only required one minor, unimportant seeming modification to short-circuit the entire Roman justice system.

Trump has done something similar. Put in place judges that will support him so he can rule by decreed - I mean 'presidential order' but the whole point of the US system was to have 3 arms of power, the goal being that one couldn't take complete power. Too late. With the judicery on his side, exactly what can the two houses do now? He HAS sole power.

Me too. I can hardly even watch the late night shows because I can't stand to hear what he's done today. But I really do believe we will find a way to come through this. Right now everyone is just trying to find the right path.
