Wars, Invasions, & Imperialism Thread v. Ukraine & Russia

so kill a bunch a Ukrainians, cause over a million refugees to flee west, over 2 million displaced, bomb them into oblivia, because you don't like a sovereign country having western leanings

this isn't 1950 - we really should be past this point and im sorry, but you're all really fucked up for believing Russia has a right to do what they're doing
I agree. Nothing Russia is doing is cool. Civilians are being killed, and Russia is straight up bombing cities, television stations, whatever tf. It's not a fucking game, and it's not an action movie or some shit.

You can have a nuanced analysis and recognize that the NATO countries have had a hand in agitating them, but that's no reason to excuse what they're doing honestly.

So fear is a justification for brutality
this is all arguing from point that Russia can’t help but fear this all powerful nato with their fingers in every pie but it was aggression towards Ukraine that got Russia booted from nato
so that argument doesn’t wash with me
they are afraid of problems they caused?
no they want to reclaim Ukraine. They want the USSR back together and they want the deep warm water ports of Ukraine
Switzerland has taken a side they froze russian assets when they never took a side on anything and never froze the assets of any country during any conflict before. Switzerland preferred banking place for that reason. It shows how unagurab heinous these actions are that the Swiss would break with their neutrality and freeze Russian assets.

I wonder how many times in history somebody has actually changed their mind because of something they read on social media.

I'm going to guess that the answer is 0
I think a quote from a Russian feels appropriate:

“The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him.” - Leo Tolstoy

In truth; facts don’t change peoples opinions, they usually make them double down.

Man, this is quite a bit of progress, right? Ukraine is huge and it's like a week in. Don't know if the map's real though.
My impression was that Russia had quite a bit of setbacks and was getting "beat".

While I firmly believe Russia is wrong, and violating the sovereignty of Ukraine, I'm not surprised that Western media is misrepresenting some things. I saw a NPR article about freakin' Russian children being arrested for carrying a "No More War" sign to the Ukrainian embassy in Moscow. 7-11 year old kids, five of them... I'm sorry, either Putin is MORE evil than I had thought, or that was 100% staged/misrepresented.

It's also not surprising that the Russian advance has gone so far already. They're a major world power and Ukraine has been kinda in shambles for decades. They don't have the numbers, even if they did have the firepower, to fend off the Reds.

Well i'm not going to lose any sleep over it I can tell you that much. nor try capitalilise on it ( that is the shameful part on zelensky's part). It was a fucking memorial (monument) and nothing more. Personally i'm so sick of this reverence re: WW2 and the Nazis. But the holocaust is also milked for all it is worth in the interests of political expendiency. I honestly highly doubt that the exact coordinates of that memorial were specifically given to the operators that fired that missile. But as with all things such (the truth and details) will be revealed at some time in the future i'm sure. It always happens. Look how long it took for factual information to surface re; that jetliner that the Soviets shot down.
Turns out the Holocaust Memorial being destroyed was fake news. A reporter went there and took pictures of it undamaged.

That's according to Wikipedia.

Yeah there's definitely a lot of shit that's wrong, it's like the article I posted earlier said. This is also a war on social media, that US and NATO are winning for sure.

We also still don't have a single image of either of the two Russian IL-76 transport planes full of paratroopers that Ukraine claimed to have shot down.

But see here's the thing - Yanukovych was a converted pro-moscow puppet who rejected the EU in favor of Moscow

he also killed civilians

where is he now? i'll give you 1 guess....
You mean the guy who was elected? What a shock - many Ukrainians support Russia.... wow.... if only we could force them to change their minds somehow yea?

If I hear globohomo one more time I swear to fucking God
I'm sick of hearing of their bullshit too.

Why the fuck does it matter if the military is gay and raising rainbow flags? Even if you support the Globo.....errmm LGBTQQIIAP2+ community, that's fucking unnecessary and stupid.

An international cat federation has banned all Russian-owned and bred cats from competing in international competitions, in a move that’s sure to stop Putin’s attack on Ukraine.
No, this isn’t a Babylon Bee story.

This was already posted with a photo of a cat. Hard to miss actually. People feel desperate and are doing what they can to make their displeasure known. Even in the most small ways. Like pouring out vodka and banning cats.
Like all the Russian people protesting the war even though they face imprisonment for doing so.
It’s called giving a fuck about human beings aka compassion also known as empathy.

Another thing I noticed, since when do Americans/English spell it "Kyiv"?

I feel like for all of my life it's been spelled I guess the more Anglicized "Kiev".

I could be tripping. Anybody else notice that recently in media? Even on Wikipedia now.

If I'm not tripping, I guess they're spelling it that way to be more sympathetic to Ukraine? Idk.

There is nothing coming out that can really be trusted I think a lot of the “Russia is getting beat” talk is for a twofold reason; first to keep the Ukrainians fighting and not demoralized and second to make fun of Putin and make him feel foolish it’s psych ops. This is my opinion. They have a huge army and are going slow I think to break the will of the Ukrainian people taking out infrastructure starving them out freezing them out. we see that the have that port city we know Russia wants and needs those deep warm water ports for their oil exports I hope once they get what they want they just stop(for now)
