The 2018 Trump Presidency thread

Agreed.

But i strongly doubt the dems will ever run with anything resembling a left wing candidate; they are, after all, a centre-right party.

As much as i'd love to see someone like Sanders get the nod, it seems unlikely, given the party's corporate power base.

Then again, nobody expected to see an incoherent hateful orange clown in the white house either...
So who knows?

Well someone that wont put someone in charge of the EPA who was committed to destroying it. By putting a wedding planner in charge of public housing...you know...that kind of thing

Yeah, point taken.
Someone not hell-bent on destroying the less fortunate, the country and the planet?

Surely that's not so much to ask.

These really do seem like the end times when we find ourselves discussing such things.

Totally. Our own govt is bad enough but they will be getting the boot soon enough. Whats happened in America is like some kind of dark satire happening in real life.

Indeed.

I think we'll look back and remark about how great an idea democracy was...

but maybe the message will be "democracy doesn't work" - much like they said about communism in the post cold war period.

That's assuming that there will be anyone left to broadcast or receive any such message.
We're entering dangerous territory with nuclear war and trump's downfall both being on the cards at the same time.
But it goes to show how well conditioned we are with this dystopian insanity; people are just brushing it off.
I expect that's a calculated thing - to disengage the population by wearing out their ability to be any more disgusted with their govt.

Well the old indigenous culture worked of shared work, shared food. No money. Seemed to go fine till we came along and fucked it up

I said alleged rapist.

No you didn't. You call him a rapist all the time, sometimes multiple times a day.
And you do this having not even researched the accusations.
Have there been any convictions? Any settlements?

Honestly, if you can't discuss the senile old creep without echoing his misogynistic garbage, you're better off just not posting at all.
The truth may offend you but it is not misogynistic.
It offends me sometimes but I won't just sit there and deny it.

But you know, it's really fucking low to talk about rape survivors like that. You clearly have very little insight or empathy.
What did I say about rape survivors? WTF are you talking about?
So not only have you not bothered to research the cases that you are basing your loathly belief on, but you need to slander and character assassinate me when I ask that you back up a claim?
That's actually pretty offensive to accuse me of having no empathy for rape survivors.
The only way you can justify your narrative is to dehumanize people that disagree with you politically. It's extremely childish FYI.

"The truth may offend you..." and whatever other patronising nonsense.

Trump has been accused of sexual assault by like a dozen women.

What sort of "research" do you expect anyone to do on a matter that is yet to go to court?

Conspiracy sites? Russian propaganda? Alex Jones?

I'll leave you to your trump apologist gibberish.

No money is not the same as no bartering system. And any bartering system is by its nature capitalist.

Besides, you wanna go live in that type of society you go ahead. They still exist in some places. They might well kill you before you get to praise their awesomeness but you can try.

Also, "seemed to go fine" has a nasty habit of translating in practice to "it was great if you were a man, if you were a chick not so much".

I think he's talking about indigenous australian cultures, which as far as i am aware weren't about bartering as much as living off the land. I don't know if 'hunter gatherer' is the right term, but something along those lines.

And a lot of indigenous cultures had matriarchal societies, so i wouldn't be too sure about the thing about chicks.

I suspect life was hard for men and women alike - but they survived at least 100,000 years here.
They have some pretty amazing culture; dreamtime stories, music.
What have we got? policemen? Alcohol? Fucking AC/DC?? :D

They are the oldest surviving civilisations on earth, and they would still be going strong (and sustainably - the key point here) if industry, empire and capitalism hadn't disrupted and debased their land.

We're on a collision course with our own demise, ultimately - little over 200 years after british colonists barged in killing, raping and enslaving everyone.

If i had to say with civilisation had the better idea, i wouldn't say the colonisers. They/we fucked it for everyone.
I bet australia was fucking stunning before they cut down all the forests.

Just for arguments sake, how long a civilization lasts in itself doesn't strike me as particularly important if actually living in that society sucks.

I doubt you'd wanna live like they did for long, I sure wouldn't.

It's a false comparison. Like saying it can either be exactly like before white people arrived or exactly like it is now with no middle ground possible.

Grass is always greener syndrome.

Another false comparison is the assumption that a social system that works for a very small society like a small tribe or lots of small tribes could ever function in a society of millions. Let alone all the other differences.

Yeah, but you're also saying in another thread that everyone in the current world is going to get what they deserve from climate change.
Which is it?

As for the "grass is greener" syndrome, that's the only reason i might not 'choose' to live in pre-colonial Australia - because if given the choice i think i'd quite fancy living in a world that appeared to have a future with me and my family on it.
Modern conveniences mean that i'd obviously opt for now given the choice.

I don't think modern conveniences are all that convenient, and i think running around naked living off the land in an unspoiled prehistoric utopia sounds pretty appealling. Call me raving mad :)

It might be that I'm really tired (so if I don't reply for hours after this post, thats why I fell asleep). But I don't see how what I'm saying here and there contradict each other.

The trappings of modern life cause unhappiness. I doubt rampant depression was a thing pre-industrialization. People didn't have time to be depressed. In that way, I envy the past. You can't automatically assume that technological advancements cause contentment; to the contrary, people seem to be getting unhappier year by year, and we've got fucking technology that people in the 60s thought was two centuries away still.
