Barcelona: Terrorist Attack on Las Ramblas

I guess it was inevitable that one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world would be struck eventually :(

I have many friends on holiday there at the moment, hope they're all safe.


Barcelona: Van hits crowds in Ramblas tourist area

A van has ploughed into crowds in Barcelona's Las Ramblas tourist area.

Spanish police say several people have been injured in a "massive crash", while emergency services are urging people to stay away from the area around Plaça de Catalunya.

Reports from the scene say people are taking cover in nearby shops and cafes.

Reuters news agency reports that emergency services have requested the closure of local metro and train stations.

El Pais newspaper said the driver of the vehicle had fled on foot after mowing down dozens of people.

This event is tragic. I believe 12 people were killed and 80 injured. It's such a nightmare to imagine that happening in Las Ramblas.

CFC, I hope your friends are safe and well.
 
Would be great if Western Governments would, you know, actually take some steps to stop this sh*t happening. Steps that would have significant public support.

As much as there are many things I hate about trump and I am totally a liberal democrat. I actually support the muslim ban created by trump.

We can't let america turn into europe. When it gets to the point that you are scared to go out to a festival or busy mall you have greatly compromised your country.

I'm really sorry about the refugees that are just fleeing for their lives, but Islam is an evil ideology fundamentalist or not. I'm not a fan of religion period, we already have one ruining this country (christianity) we don't need another.

When other people's fantasies and religions affect my life, I am against it. I can't use drugs except one of the most distructive (alcohol) based on what I believe is a strong morality-based biased against drugs which is rooted in christianity which runs the government. People cant get married because of this twisted religion, people can't have abortions.

I don't want another fake religion influencing my secular lifestyle so I support the muslim ban

if you can't follow bluelight's user agreement, you shouldn't post here - and won't be able to post here. it's really not very complicated.

"western governments" can't stop this happening. we've been at war with "terrorism" for over 15 years, and it doesn't seem to be getting better.
ostracising - or "banning" muslims people will only increase muslim radicalisation in the west.

i'm getting bored of explaining this each time there is a terrorist attack, but it's always seized up by people wishing to exploit human suffering for their misguided anti-immigration agendas, every single time.

islam isnt an ideology, it is a faith with over a billion adherents, and many different interpretations.

sorry to tell you, but the USA already has very deep cultural and ethnic tensions. don't be scared of something just because you don't understand it.

tying these terrorist attacks in with all muslims is like me assuming all americans are like trump, or one of those nazi scumbags marching n charlottesville last weekend.
i don't want that "evil" shit in australia, so maybe we should ban all "americans"? (canadians and central/south americans included)

I may have been abusive, certainly not racist. Quite astounding how someone who claims to be tertiary educated can't distinguish between criticising bad ideas,those who act on those ideas, and criticising a whole group of ppl based on their race, religion etc

Yes genius, and it's a literal interpretation that is the problem. Cause, you know, the Quran/hadith says to kill infidels, rape their women, etc etc

But but but the Bible!!!! Yes, a literal interpretation of that would also be very problematic. Thankfully it is so rare these days as to not constitute a problem in the sense of random murders

What disgusting things have I said about Muslims? I actually grew up with Muslims, and have known many. Some good, some bad. The disgusting views many held about women was one of the things that awakened me to what Islam is about. I have done plenty of my own research. I'm not some redneck who hates foreigners. I grew up in a diverse city.

And me calling you comrade is not a term of endearment. I'm identifying you as an adherent of a disgusting ideology that was responsible for the deaths of millions.

Voluntary repatriation would be an interesting idea. Surely those who seek to impose Islamic values on the west would jump at the chance to be moved to a Muslim country? Oh, hang on...

One mentally unstable individual is not comparable to groups and cells of ideologically inspired people. That 'nazi' would have done the same if he were in china and the victim were a free tibet protester.

The lens through which you see and comment, spacejunk, is about as entertaining and insightful as Sadiq Khans comments on the same issue. It's the same old dull, uninspiring broken record of someone who is too invested in their own political ideology to have the insight to take a step back and re-evaluate.

Indeed. I find spacepunk interesting because he seems to be the epitome of the deluded leftist. Way too heavily indoctrinated to even meaningfully enagge with material or views that might challenge him. A self appointed intellectual who wouldn't dare take a step outside his well guarded bubble.
 
Worth noting that these attacks have a habit of happening around voting periods.

Catalonians vote in a few months in an attempt to secede from Spain.
Nothing like a well-timed terrorist attack to maintain national solidarity.
