The Ferguson thread / additional race discussion

If this isn't proof that the last thing the right wing in America is ever going to do is defend themselves against tyranny with guns then i don't know what is. Their town is under martial law and all they can think of using those guns for is to protect against mostly unarmed looters? I would be impressed if the so called pro gun anti-government crowd stopped acting like typical reactionaries and instead used those guns to defend their community from the tyranny of martial law. But as these people are of the petite Bourgeois class thus counter revolutionary to the core you see them yet again backing up the regime they claim to hate.

Do you really think that inequality and oppression of black people stopped with the end of slavery? You need a history lesson. And I don't mean that in a condescending way - we don't always see eye to eye on some issues but generally I respect you as someone with a degree of empathy and the ability to think a bit deeper about stuff. There are very deep structural issues that affect black communities in America and, while things have improved in the last few decades, they are still perpetuated through to this very day. When you get the time I'd highly recommend reading this article, it goes far deeper into the real issues of race that still afflict American society. It's a long read but it's worth taking the time to delve into.

In this particular case, from my perspective, whether this kid was a "thug" or not - whether he assaulted the cop or not - the rage and resentment that has exploded goes much, much deeper than this one kid. And the response of the police to the protests should be cause for concern for any right thinking person - is this the sort of country you really want to live in? Where police declare martial law. Where the police arrest and assault journalists for doing their job? Where the right to free assembly is rendered null and void? Where the police behave like an occupying force and don't in any way represent the neighbourhoods they're supposed to be protecting?

Amazing how someone who doesn't live in the US understands this when so many others here do not...or maybe pretend they don't.

This incident is really sad and embarrassing on so many levels.

Because its the same all over man.

^ I don't know if it the same all over or not. A friend from England sent me a video to watch about binge drinking in his part of the world (it is a big news story there apparently) and I couldn't even concentrate on the intended content of the video because I was in a state of shock over how the police responded to a very drunk and belligerent young kid that had been thrown out of a bar. The kid was wising off to the cops and the cops did not respond to that but kept their focus on the situation. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN HERE. If you contradict a cop, interrupt a cop, scowl at a cop, let alone argue with a cop or (unimaginably) refuse to do what a cop tells you you will no doubt be threatened (at the very, very least), more probably arrested, roughed up or, if you are a black male, particularly a young black male, possibly killed. By contrast the officers in this video stayed calm, did not take anything personally and kept trying to ratchet the situation down rather than up. In other words they were there to keep the peace but they did not see this young man as an enemy or someone to be "taught a lesson"; they saw him as a drunk teenager that needed to get off the street and sleep it off. In other words they were still human and they treated the kid as one as well.

I live in a small city. We have some gang problems but in the scope of things they are a very minor threat to anyone outside the gangs. We have a large homeless population so we have a lot of "disturbing the peace" arrests for being inebriated in public and for simply being mentally unstable as well as minor property crimes. I know many people in the police force because my kids went to school with their kids. Cops in America are being outfitted like troops in combat for the most ridiculous situations. They are developing a worldview that is getting more and more skewed and ingrown; an us against the enemy perception. I am a white older woman, and I look about as threatening as a baby in a stroller, and yet my interactions with cops in my hometown are always fraught with this insidious intensity as they feel the need to establish through tone of voice, body language and choice of language the lack of shared humanity. I really do fear for this country. It is as if all the ugliness that was there when I was growing up hidden away in the backwaters and dark corners of society is now coming into full fruition in an institutionalized form that scared citizens not only fail to protest but support as necessary for their protection.

haha that guy in the meme looks funny. That's not the actual definition of white trash in the United States though. The way most people use the term today in the United States and other countries is not the actual definition of it.

Nutty yes that guy did it as a joke. He's more of a stereotypical redneck. I have lived in areas even large cities where people do not call 9-1-1 because the police take an hour or more to get there, if they ever arrive.

/\ I'd rather be labeled white trash over delusional commie any day, and it's pretty obvious that whoever took that pic took it as a joke. =D It's pretty funny that the same people throwing out racial insults are the same ones defending a certain people that could easily be called something racial based on the way they're behaving.

COLLAPSE? Radio Station Claims Primary Witness Will Admit Michael Brown Charged Officer Darren Wilson

Posted by Bob Owens on August 20, 2014 at 6:58 am

Radio station KFNS-FM (100.7 FM, “The Viper”) of Troy, Missouri is reporting on its Facebook page a bombshell of a claim:

***BREAKING NEWS***
Remember, you saw it and heard it here first. We have heard (from a VERY connected national media source) that Ferguson officer Darren Wilson will be cleared in the shooting of Michael Brown. The key: Dorian Johnson has now admitted that Michael Brown attacked Officer Wilson and attempted to take his gun. OFFICER WILSON WILL NOT BE CHARGED! This is scary. When this news is made official, we all have reason to be concerned about the reaction.

If KFNS-FM’s claim that primary witness Dorian Johnson has admitted that Michael Brown turned and charged Officer Darren Wilson turns out to be accurate, it strongly suggests that Officer Darren Wilson be exonerated, and that his shooting of Michael Brown will be found to have been in self-defense.

The claim comes on the day after a night of protests in which 47 people were arrested and three loaded handguns were recovered.

The St. Louis County Circuit Court grand jury is scheduled to begin hearing evidence as early as today on the incident, depending on the ability of St. Louis County prosecutors to get witnesses to court to testify. Local reporter Christine Byers has claimed that police have more than a dozen witnesses that will testify that the 6’4″, 290 lbs Brown charged Officer Wilson.

We caution Bearing Arms readers to take these claims with a degree of skepticism until we hear the official word from St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCullouch.

Jesus you're stupid. It's a blog for people that support the second amendment. In case anyone bothered actually reading anything the article was about the radio station's claim which is why they said for readers to take it with a degree of skepticism until more facts come out. But I guess it's only ok to speculate if you're on the other side. :\

But isn't the second amendment meant to protect against government tyranny? :?

Not only that - they're lauding that guns were "recovered". I bet they'd be going ape-shit if it was a bunch of good ol' boys having their guns "recovered" by the state :\

Yeah, it's horrible they're protecting their businesses from violent looters. They should instead start shooting at the National Guard for trying to bring order back into the city. That sounds smart.

Well it's easy for pussies with big guns to defend themselves against unarmed people so that's the real reason why they are not protecting themselves against what is basically a siege by the government. All their rhetoric is exactly that rhetoric and now the right wing looks like even bigger pussies to the rest of us. It's easy to bear arms against civilians lol.

The sad thing is most of them like you are probably on the governments side. Nice to know you respect law and order so much nutty :p

gun-club-walk-2.jpg

From the beginning of the rifle open carry movement in Texas, anti-gun Democrats have pretended that the movement is entirely right-wing, white, and male. The fact that the open carry protesters were often represented by African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans and women was completely ignored… it didn’t fit the narrative that the anti-gun Democrats were trying to create.

An assertion was made repeatedly that if a group composed of minorities attempted a similar open carry march, that the police would shoot them to pieces, or that white society would lose their minds in hysterical fear.

gunclub-walk-3.jpg

Well, that hypothetical walk just became a reality and somehow, it seemed that everything went off without a hitch.

A group of about 30 people conducted an armed self-defense patrol in parts of South Dallas on Wednesday afternoon.

The people, members of the Huey P. Newton Gun Club, walked along sidewalks and into a neighborhood restaurant along Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The gun club said in a release that the “recent murders of unarmed black, brown, and whites across the United States of America has eradicated trust in the police.”

The gun club was created for community policing and self-defense.

Those of you who are “of a certain age” will no doubt recognize the name Huey P. Newton, the co-founder of the Black Panthers, and there is no doubt that the Huey P. Newton Gun Club has a militant, leftist, and racial bent to its messaging.

You know what? That’s okay.

The Second Amendment, like the rest of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution applies to all of us equally, and considering how African-Americans have often been disenfranchised by both political parties over the years, I can’t blame them for having a chip on their shoulders.

My primary concern was that they practice better muzzle discipline than many of the other long gun open carry groups, and while they weren’t any worse, I’d still like for people to realize that “down” is not a safe direction on concrete sidewalks and building floors.

All in all, it was a good march. The Huey P. Newton Gun Club go their message across, and shockingly, the police and citizenry respected their right to exercise their First and Second Amendment rights… without anyone losing their minds.

Shannon Watts, presumably on her second box of wine for the day and hiding behind her Bloomberg security detail, could not be reached for comment.

Land of the free...

====================================================================

THE shooting of Michael Brown, an 18-year-old African-American, by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, is a reminder that civilians—innocent or guilty—are far more likely to be shot by police in America than in any other rich country. In 2012, according to data compiled by the FBI, 410 Americans were “justifiably” killed by police—409 with guns. That figure may well be an underestimate. Not only is it limited to the number of people who were shot while committing a crime, but also, amazingly, reporting the data is voluntary.

Last year, in total, British police officers actually fired their weapons three times. The number of people fatally shot was zero. In 2012 the figure was just one. Even after adjusting for the smaller size of Britain’s population, British citizens are around 100 times less likely to be shot by a police officer than Americans. Between 2010 and 2014 the police force of one small American city, Albuquerque in New Mexico, shot and killed 23 civilians; seven times more than the number of Brits killed by all of England and Wales’s 43 forces during the same period.

The explanation for this gap is simple. In Britain, guns are rare. Only specialist firearms officers carry them; and criminals rarely have access to them. The last time a British police officer was killed by a firearm on duty was in 2012, in a brutal case in Manchester. The annual number of murders by shooting is typically less than 50. Police shootings are enormously controversial. The shooting of Mark Duggan, a known gangster, which in 2011 started riots across London, led to a fiercely debated inquest. Last month, a police officer was charged with murder over a shooting in 2005. The reputation of the Metropolitan Police’s armed officers is still barely recovering from the fatal shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, an innocent Brazilian, in the wake of the 7/7 terrorist bombings in London.

In America, by contrast, it is hardly surprising that cops resort to their weapons more frequently. In 2013, 30 cops were shot and killed—just a fraction of the 9,000 or so murders using guns that happen each year. Add to that a hyper-militarised police culture and a deep history of racial strife and you have the reason why so many civilians are shot by police officers. Unless America can either reduce its colossal gun ownership rates or fix its deep social problems, shootings of civilians by police—justified or not—seem sure to continue.
