    Bluelight
When a new member registers, they get a system driven private message (PM) that welcomes them to the site and provides a lot of useful information. I'll post the full body below, but we're asking for new members and old to give us some feedback on making the message more useful.

We are looking to do some site restructuring, possibly moving or merging some forums, so those will obviously get reflected in any new message. However, can you look at this and give your opinion on:

Does the NSFW section of additional forums become too much information? Or is it good to give a whole site overview in the initial welcome package?

Is any of it misleading or poorly worded, or simply in need of removal as being pointless or useless?

Is there anything you thought of that new members should be made aware of upon their arrival?

Any and all feedback is wanted and encouraged - YOUR experience helps make the next person's arrival that much better. Thank you for helping.

    Welcome to Bluelight!

We're excited that you've chosen to join the world's largest online forum dedicated to Harm Reduction. We hope that, regardless of the reason you've chosen to join us, you stay and become an active member of the community.

    The rules

Like any community we have a few rules to try to keep things safe, positive, welcoming and fun. We'll keep it brief right now but we encourage you to familiarise yourself with a couple of really simple guidelines:

    • No sourcing or supply: This really is one of the golden rules at Bluelight. We're not here to enable the sale or purchase of drugs and, because this is so central to our core values, we're pretty zero-tolerance about it. If you have joined to buy or sell drugs and you post about it in our forums, you'll be banned immediately.
    • Keep it civil: Bluelight is a large, vibrant community where all manner of topics, some controversial, are discussed. disagreement is to be expected and encouraged but please focus on discussing the subject, not attacking the person.
    • No SWIMming: using terms like 'SWIM/my pet hamster/my mum's iguana' do not protect you and are just silly to read. We don't do that here.
    • Search first: if you have a question, it's probably been asked before. Try using the BL search feature or the site Google search at the top left corner of the page before you post a question.

There's more on our rules in the hidden section below but that's it for now. Pretty straightforward, right?

    Getting started

    • Introduce yourself: Post a quick intro. in New Member Introductions.
    • Post basic questions: For many new Bluelighters the Basic Drug Discussion is the first stop for questions about safe use.
    • Know how to get help: If you have a question about the site, posting rules, how to use the site software, or anything else Bluelight-related, either post a response in a relevant thread in our Support forum or drop an email to [email protected].

    The discussion forums

Again, there's a fuller list of forums in the hidden section below but here's a quick tour of the main categories into which Bluelight is divided:

If you are interested in reading the site rules in more depth or learning more about individual forums in the various categories, click the "NSFW" button bellow to expand a larger section.

    It's great to have you!

    The Bluelight Team

    NSFW:

    Bluelight's Mission and the Rules
Bluelight's formal mission statement is: "Bluelight is an international, online harm-reduction community, committed to reducing the harm associated with drug use.

Bluelight neither condones nor condemns the use of drugs. Rather, we accept that drug use will always exist irrespective of legal status or societal norms. While there is no truly safe way to use drugs, we understand that prohibition and abstinence are not realistic or desirable solutions for everyone, nor have they been adequate in addressing the serious public health concerns associated with drug use.

While there is no universal definition of drug-related harm reduction, Bluelight believes that through frank and open discussion we are able to deliver accurate information, eliminate misinformation and empower individuals to make wiser, more responsible choices.

Bluelight understands that drug use encompasses a broad range of behaviors, some safer than others, and that drug use can progress towards increased risk with some individuals. We encourage our community to be honest and cognizant of their drug use and understand the warning signs of abuse and addiction before they manifest.

Bluelight also hosts a robust recovery community for those seeking a way out of drug abuse and addiction. These forums invite visitors to discuss addiction and sobriety in a non-judgmental setting, share recovery resources and encourage members to seek help. We believe there are various roads to recovery, including 12-step programs such as Narcotics/Alcoholics Anonymous and alternatives such as SMART Recovery.

Bluelight’s overarching philosophy is a simple: Meet people where they are and encourage open dialogue that empowers the individual to be the primary agent of her own physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
    "

You can read the site-wide rules to which you agree when you register here: The Bluelight User Agreement

Please remember that different forums have different community standards and what's acceptable in one forum may be frowned upon in another. Always be sure to familiare yourself with the individual forum guidelines which are generally linked at the top of every forum page.

Too much info will get skimmed over or just not read. Too little will obviously leave folks underinformed (and most people dont read the fine print)

The current message seems to be on target. Changing it might be a mistake

For historic context the Mods in this sub forum changed the message (and rules) about posting your location about three months ago if memory serves. Previously if you posted your location it was an automatic infraction.

Looks like the name of Advanced Drug Discussion was never changed to Neuroscience & Pharmacology Discussion, and the regional discussions have changed, etc.

By the time they read the PM, they already have their name

    = = =

Thanks for the feedback. Anything is appreciated.

Personally, I felt like the PM is a massive overload of information that might be better presented and maintained by a few short links to key threads that are stickied in NMI or elsewhere. For example, the forum summary...obviously outdated, structure needs to be updated, and as we head into more forum merges it is likely to be revised multiple times. If the Welcome Wagon PM says simply "Check this linked thread" then it always stays up to date.

I honestly really like it as is, it covers pretty much everything.

They'll skim the Bolded topics, see if interested, then look into more closely if they desire.

Now it it were an unbolded wall of text, like the introduction for new mods PM, i may get overloaded.

But the organization and layout is so well done that i think it really is good like this - it allows them to delve deep or back out at any time.
    - We don't see things the way they are, we see things the way we are. -

I am a big fan of the KISS model and agree that a link to a centralized message would be much easier and more effective to maintain, yet convey the same ideas. I am open to that change.

As a green particle here, I found it informative about a week in. I read the rules, then just dove in. When I needed more, I dug deeper. What is the single most driving purpose for change? Do some find it confusing?
Usually those that ignore welcomes and rules will continue to ignore, no matter how great the typesetting and layout may be.
IF you wanna steer the creative away from silly usernames, maybe an example of a good and not so good name? Hmmm, that’d be pretty hard...

The no swim thing is given too much importance, tbh it's really more annoying to have 50 ppl point it out and become used for infracting, does it have to be such a feature?

Theres too many stupid inane guidelines per forum too.

Too many rules added over the years, maybe strip all back to basics and let those who insist on these rules go away .
