Georgia mom accidentally smothers baby during fatal meth overdose, sheriff says

A 31-year old woman who died from a methamphetamine overdose accidentally smothered her 8-month-old son, a Cherokee County sheriff?s spokesman said.

The bodies were found July 17 in a home on Cedar Mill Crossing in Acworth, sheriff?s spokesman Jay Baker said Friday in a statement. The woman?s 2-year-old daughter was discovered in the home unharmed and is with family members.

Authorities were called to the residence after a family member said they hadn?t been able to get in contact with the woman, identified as Holly Whitley, officials said.

?There were no obvious injuries to Whitley or her infant son,? Baker said.

The GBI Crime Lab completed an autopsy in July, but officials were awaiting the results of the toxicology report to determine the cause and manner of death.

Officials listed the manner of death for Whitley and her son as accidental. Whitley?s cause of death was methamphetamine toxicity and the baby?s was mechanical asphyxia.

?In layman?s terms,? Baker said, ?Ms. Whitley died from a lethal amount of methamphetamine in her system. Her body came to rest on top of her infant, which caused the child to smother, leading to his death.?

A GoFundMe page created to help pay for funeral costs for Whitley and her son identified the baby as Alex Fuentes.

I know at first I wondered how that would even be possible

When I would shoot meth I would already be hovering over the toilet as I knew I would puke and shit my guts out

Please please PLEASE don’t shoot around your kids guys - this story made me cry a little. No judgment if you’re still using just PLEASE be careful!!!

Please go to the next room and close the door and make sure your heart is feeling like it’ll hold up after your dose/shot. Please!!!!!!

It's heartbreaking.
In all honesty, I don't know much about meth. I've smoked it, I've shot it once but a very small amount. I was always under the impression that it's pretty "difficult" to overdose meth though. *again, i dont really know much though.

This is a sad sad sad story. I just couldn't imagine. I'm not judging anyone, but I won't even drink beer when my toddler is home. Just out of the fear that ANYTHING can happen. Also, that poor little girl lost her brother and mother all in one. My heart hurts for her.

It’s incredibly easy to OD shooting meth. Here it is almost pure, and 50mg IV means I would puke and shit my guts out.

I never gained a tolerance. Even after shooting it daily for about a year.

My friends would shoot it with a tolerance and do like 500mg in a shot. That would - I am convinced - have killed me. I put color coded stickers on the syringes because shooting my friends dose would have been lights out for sure.

Your heart will skip a beat if your shot is big. You will feel the tachycardia and palpitations. People have had strokes, heart attacks or died with 200mg shots.

No one should be aiming over a 50mg shot without a decent long term tolerance.

Some people have weak hearts and can die from a small/modest dose of meth or MDMA if you have a bad heart but this is a rare reaction.

Smoking meth is a little different; you’re taking tiny puffs from a pipe slowly and it’s not a huge dose in the middle of nowhere like snorting a huge line (instead of taking tiny bumps spaced out); it’s a little safer to dose in smaller amounts like this but I always preferred a shot and I imagine the average addict would too.
