... need money to keep this website running? I remember being asked for money back in the day. But now you have literally half a dozen posters per forum, if that.

Its very sad seeing this forum die, even if Alasdair did his best to kill me (and others - still got that perma infraction point).

Sad. Really sad. Don't see you recovering. Xenforo may be a little start.

Edit. 1 member (me), 18 guests. On a Friday evening. FFS.

Oi, I've been here all fuckin day. But the cunts ain't getting any of my money I can tell you. No, that's reserved for the drugs I can't get anymore...

So nevermind your 1 member bollocks, I make two members - and that represents a DP ifaic.

So EADD takes it up the cunt and the shitter at the same time...

Forums (that I've used for for close to 2 decades at lesat) on the whole are dying left right and centre. Probably loads of reason. Long term posters getting too cliquey, abusive (somewhat) to new users, the youth of today more interested in snapchat or whatever bollox is currently popular. And facebook / reddit having pages for pretty much everything people could want and already have an account for. Perhaps there are just more places out there. There weren't many general drug forums around back in the early 2000s, probably here and shroomery, so everyone gravitated towards them eventually, compared to now, more places so the userbase is more spreadout.

Ideas to get bluelight back on the up and up?
Get rid of the no sourcing rules, hell add a marketplace lol ;)

You want blasts from the past? Gun toting hip gansta just did it for you.

We’re all crawling out of the woodwork.

Too late to save this s(h)ite though.

How's mums net doing? In the Internet downturn since the economic down turn?

FACT! Sad but true. Doubt it's likely to change either for all the reasons listed above. Like many media, fora like these had their day in the sun and have now been largely replaced by newer media that scratch that same itch for people in different ways. Like chit-chat? Reddit, Facebook, Twitter and other more yoofier than I dare suggest sites have one covered. Like drug sources? A variety of sites not allowed to be mentioned here got your back. Fuck, even posting actual paragraphs like this 'ere one puts folk off cos it looks crazy long on a phone screen despite only being three and a gnat's lines long on a standard monitor.

No can do and nope again. BL has close links with "legit" organisations like MAPS as well as a number of universities around the world so allowing source discussion would be a mite "off-brand" - not to mention such places being taken down when hosted on the naughtywebs let alone (still fairly...) high on the Googles. Besides, that's what PMs are for innit ;)

I keed, I keed. Don't PM sources, kiddies.

But if you do do please also accidentally report them cos that always provides much gigglings to many :D

That aside though and back to the initial question...

Bit of a circular one afaik. My (very limited indeed) understanding is that when the forum's dead there is not such a clear need for funding above and beyond that wot is gained from extant sources, but back when it was heaving it cost more to keep up and running cos traffic... probably. I know nowt though so may be completely mistaken. I do know that donations are not really actively sought anymore outside of the odd legacy sig like mine though. At least nobody's been asked to push for 'em for the forum for ages now.

We get paid in snidey MSJ's mostly, and the funding goes towards that. Ten for infractions and fifteen if you delete someone.

It's not a healthy habit but it keeps my finger on the delete key.

Everythings been said all questions answered nothing new to talk about ....we need another smack drought that would crank it up. I was on a great forum alt drugs hard that had a brilliant buzz and tons of posts but that died due to trolls, fake adverts etc. I give this place a year before it changes in to less of a forum and more a place to get information wiki type of thing. Of course PM's are useful but then after one you canjust change to mobi's whatsapp etc.
i heard some people are naughty

Yep, our traffic is down and social forums are mostly pretty dead - but as a reference (especially for rare, new and exotic chems) it is an enormous reference point that IMO is second to none.
Erowid is similarly antiquated and performs a similar role - but i think it's easy to forget how many people lurk and never post.

I mean, in the last year i've met, partied with, and bought drugs off quite a few kids in their early 20s who speak of bluelight as something of a drug bible.
I'm not sure how BL comes up in conversation, but when you are talking about drugs with someone knowledgeable at a party, odds are that they became knowledgeable about drugs through reading this here site.
Considering that it's an online message board that is as old as they are, i reckon that's an indicator of some continued relevance on our part, even in the age of social media and whatever else.

They might never register an account or contribute - but the HR information in the forums is a really valuable tool for a lot of people. I lurked for years before registering an account, and the only reason i eventually did so and started posting was because i finally had a practical question to ask - to which i got a prompt and informed response.
That side of what we do here is as strong as ever, at least as far as i can tell.

Of course the dearth of traffic is a crying shame, especially in the social forums - but it has been a long time since there was any notable new intriguing drug topic to discuss - no european smack drought, no brand new super popular "new drug" a la mephedrone (just the old standards which - yeah, have been done to death - meaning vast amounts of info for those who simply UTFSE) and a greatly diminished RC market globally.

As someone in AusDD said years ago, people "come to BL for the HR info, but they stay for the community". I think that is true, and it's a shame that online communities are hard to re-build without some new reason for people to join up and talk shit.

I hope that the dull, boring world of drugs gets some interesting plot twists soon - as drug intrigue does seem to serve as one of our best recruitment tools. That might not ever happen, but i wouldn't rule it out either.

Pretty much my opinion with regard to this topic (I mean that more politely that it sounds), but I'll cover some stuff anyway.

Regarding funding, that's more an area for SG/TLB to delve into than myself, but there are still obviously server costs and XenForo will require funds, especially considering the price of some of the plugins. Some of the essential plugins that make XenForo good (spam filters etc) tend to be at least $40-50, and there are quite a few. I've got no idea whether or not donations/questionnaires contribute more than SG has to pay out of his own pocket for server costs, but I think it's worth considering that they might not.

Apart from the other obviously touted opinions on the decline of BL (which is genuinely doing remarkably well comparable to the 4-5 other message boards I've used over the years):

There is all of this.

But basically IMO vBulletin style boards are fucked. To young people, they are probably a bit like those bulletin boards & guestbooks you used to get people communicating on in the 90's/early 2000's, or a geocities/microsoft publisher website.

Personally I think that one of their (all major bulletin boards) greatest failings is the refusal to include a mobile app, as they see the web page format as sacrament; and admittedly also because it would be a lot of work to design something without compatibility issues for plugins/themes/different layouts etc. It is just such a ridiculous failing to not provide mobile app support considering the prevalence of phones and tablets and the direction of technology and I think the people at the top of the bulletin board companies need to majorly rethink the way these message boards operate if they want to stay current.

This is where XenForo will help a lot, but not completely, but it will solve some massive flaws with BL which will effect the userbase. Our version of vBulletin was in development between 2004-2009, and realistically has probably been designed almost entirely (at least initially) for windows and internet explorer...! The mobile theme is buggy and clunky, and this is exactly why. Young (and older) people coming here on their phones will probably just think "urgh, that looks like it was designed in the 2000's and it doesn't even work". For perspective it would literally be the equivalent of me coming here, as I did, at sweet sixteen, and viewing a website that started development when I was two and finished when I was seven. That's like when I joined in 2003, if the websites software development had started in 1989 and finished in 1994.

I think this would be great if it worked, other than the yearly cost:

Again, XenForo won't solve all our problems, but it will certainly solve some.

Also, young UK people aren't taking drugs or even drinking much anymore, according to the latest surveys. I blame the need for positive validation and attention on social media, particularly instagram, and spornosexualism.

Fuck it.

Time to dose the water sources.

I know they've been talking about it for decades now and it's never happened due to complete impracticality and physical impossibility (or some such nonsense) but godammit all to hell and back it is surely now time to dose all water sources worldwide with high-dose acid and shake both fists and a lil tailfeather at these damned millenials! :!

Alternatively I suppose switching to a more mobile-friendly format may work as a stop-gap prior to worldwide dosing.

Possibly.
