Abbotsford man at centre of police 'practical joke' acquitted on 7 drug charges

An Abbotsford man, whose arrest raised questions about the conduct of an Abbotsford police officer, has been acquitted of seven out of eight drug charges.

What's apparent from hidden surveillance footage is that an Abbotsford, B.C., police officer took a wad of cash off a dresser during a drug raid last November, turned around and bent over.

What was alleged is that he stuffed that money into his sock in a brazen theft.

"While it is possible to draw some inferences pointing towards guilt from the subject officer's suspicious activities, on the whole of the evidence there are other, plausible inferences, consistent with innocence, that cannot be refuted," the B.C. Prosecution Service wrote in an extended statement to the media explaining its decision.

In November 2017, police searched an Abbotsford home as part of a drug-trafficking investigation. They seized cash, weapons, drugs and drug paraphernalia. Brian MacDonald was charged with eight counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
