Reclassification recommendations for drug in 'magic mushrooms'
ScienceDaily
September 26th, 2018

In an evaluation of the safety and abuse research on the drug in hallucinogenic mushrooms, Johns Hopkins researchers suggest that if it clears phase III clinical trials, psilocybin should be re-categorized from a schedule I drug -- one with no known medical potential -- to a schedule IV drug such as prescription sleep aids, but with tighter control.

The researchers summarize their analysis in the October print issue of Neuropharmacology.

"We want to initiate the conversation now as to how to classify psilocybin to facilitate its path to the clinic and minimize logistical hurdles in the future," says Matthew W. Johnson, Ph.D., associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "We expect these final clearance trials to take place in the next five years or so."

Following the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, any drug with the potential for abuse is categorized based on criteria that take into account whether the drug has accepted medical use, and its safety and the potential for abuse. Although preliminary research studies suggest that psilocybin may be effective for smoking cessation and for disorders such as cancer-specific depression and anxiety, it must clear phase III clinical trials before the Food and Drug Administration can be petitioned to reclassify it.

I'll remember to eat a few grams of shrooms before I go to sleep. It is fun to wake up tripping =D

That would be amazing.

Since I have depression and anxiety maybe I could get it prescribed, but I won't hold my breath.

Somehow I just doubt it will happen.

I'm for legalization but it seems like drugs that strong should be schedule II at least.

Yeah seriously, nah. Why should a doctor get to determine whether or not you're fit for eating some damn mushies? No one ever told me I could and I've eaten plenty.

...I thought we were speaking strictly about therapeutic (medical) use of psilocybin in this thread.

Nah man.

You want people going to prison for shrooms?!!

Why shouldn't anyone be able to use any drugs they want in the privacy of their own home if they are adults and not driving?

I thought you were down with cognitive liberty man!

Medical use is almost the same (if not the same) as recreational when it comes to psychedelics. Not tryin' to knock your opinion man, but there shouldn't be any regulation whatsoever for psychedelics, other than regulating their purity.

This sentence just doesn't make sense to me.

How can you be for legalisation and simultaneously in support of a scheduling system that has no real relevance or usefulness outside law enforcement?

someone on the DEA's Diversion Control Division website said:
Schedule II/IIN Controlled Substances (2/2N)

Substances in this schedule have a high potential for abuse which may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence.
...like mushrooms, obviously.

This is good news. Mushrooms are pretty much the safest drug that exist, imo

I know you've heard this before, but.....nah.

I'm interested to know your idea of legalisation, but this doesn't jive with what I understand the concept to be.

It's derived from a plant. A plant, ffs. Schedule my balls.

Also, I'm not sure what you mean by "strong" but I'd argue that my experiences with alcohol and meth could be described as, um, "strong" and they make psilocybin look like breakfast cereal. If alcohol is legal, a logical extension of the concept of legalisation suggests that psilocybin should be as well.

I'm not saying, but I'm just saying.
