Got a gram of mda powder from a very reliable person, mecke, marquis, and mandelin all displayed proper mdxx coloring, very quick changes too, but the Simon's test slowly turned light brown after a minute or so, is that possibly indicative of something else, or maybe just because the powder is a tan/sandy color?

If anything it sounds like it might be a problem with the simon reagent. A positive simon test is blue, anything else should be considered a negative result (indicative of a primary amine such as MDA).
