Report highlights Australia's illicit drugs threat

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) released the fifteenth edition of the Illicit Drug Data Report today.

"The Illicit Drug Data Report brings together data from a wide range of sources into the one unique report," Mr Phelan said.

"It's the only report of its kind in Australia and provides an important evidence base to assess current and future illicit drug trends."

The 2016-17 report includes arrest, detection, seizure, purity, profiling and price data.

This reporting period saw 113,533 national drug seizures, a record 27.4 tonnes seized and a record 154,650 national drug arrests.

"The report shows that drug markets in Australia remain resilient, with enduring demand for illicit drugs, particularly illicit stimulants. Of particular note this reporting period are changes in cocaine indicators, which point to an expansion of the market," Mr Phelan said.

"Illicit drugs are not just a law enforcement issue?we need to employ a holistic approach that focuses on supply, demand and harm reduction."

"By enhancing our shared understanding of illicit drug markets and changes within these markets, we can better target our collective efforts to address drug use in our country and the harm it causes."

For the first time, some of the information and data from the Illicit Drug Data Report will be made available on the Australian Institute of Criminology's Crime Statistics Australia website. This will provide greater accessibility to the unique and valuable data contained in the report.

Yeah there's some interesting stuff in there. Like the Cannabis related statistics as below:

Cannabis is cultivated globally and remains the most frequently used and seized illicit drug worldwide.

Indicators of cannabis supply and demand in Australia provide a mixed picture, but overall point to a large, relatively stable market in 2016-17. Specifically:

- There was a record 10 987 cannabis detections at the Australian border in 2016-17.

- The number of national cannabis seizures decreased this reporting period from a record high in 2015-16, while the weight of cannabis seized in 2016-17 increased.

- While national cannabis arrests decreased this reporting period, the 77 549 arrests reported in 2016-17 is the second highest on record.

Some 77,549 people arrested for possessing or supplying Cannabis. Meanwhile the rest of the world thinks that we're one of the pioneering countries that have "legalised" Cannabis. The reality of the situation is just a tiny bit different.

Another year another report showing again the absolute failure that is the war on drugs.

Over 154,650 people arrested in a single year!

Seriously, over 77k for Cannabis alone. How do these assholes live with themselves. Waking up, ruining countless lives and thinking that they're "winning" the war on drugs when all their doing is creating untold misery.

We need all hard-drugs to be distributed via clinics (like bupe and methadone) are. With limited takeways for stable, functional drug users. Whilst dysfunctional drug users would be required to dose onsite in return for achieving milestones they would in turn receive flexibility.

A small amount of the billions saved could be used to educate drug users, provide housing, counselling (there is not enough counselling for drug users, even those on the OPT), employment assistance services and a host of other social services including nurses and at home visits for at risk families and individuals. When we had our kids we had a great a support network but i can't imagine someone with a family with multi-generational abuse, with parents who abused you, and who's relatives are assholes, trying to survive with an addiction and going through parenting and trying to deal with a baby that won't sleep.

But hey you know what /s, lets just give NSW pigs $4 billion this year so they can arrest tens of thousands of people......coz you know that sooooooooo works in solving their problems. Yup everyone who gets arrested quits drugs forever.

I love the utter denial in the report about the legalisation in the United States (sheesh, and they talk about us junkies being in denial). The fact that half of the United States has legalised cannabis in one form or another would be a massive factor in supply, pricing and availablity and yet the cops don't mention it whatsoever. Fuckers.
