My hopes are blighted, my heart is broken, my life a burden, everything around me is sad and mournful; earth has become distasteful to me, and human voices distract me. It is mercy to let me die, for if I live I shall lose my reason and become mad.

I am down for an informal debate and will nominate myself.

“US states are following the wisdom of European countries regarding euthanasia. However, in California (and AFAIK the US) you must be mentally healthy to elect for euthanasia. This is not the case for The Netherlands. Euthanasia of children is legal in Switzerland. Is the mental health requirement for euthanasia a form of discrimination; is it a legitimate requirement?”

I like this one. We've discussed it over in P&S before. Truly a difficult situation we're in.

Maybe it's just the approach that's wrong. Seems like this is something that has potential.

I didn't have something that elaborate in mind, but my thinking was that perhaps one way to go about it might be to not worry about seemingly low levels of interest at this stage, and perhaps just pick a topic, get your debaters, and just go ahead and see how the response is to an actual debate. It might be that people just seem unenthusiastic or lacking interest because it's all still very vague at this early stage. People seem interested, but beyond nominating themselves and suggesting topics there isn't much to spark continued activity yet.

One thing I would say is that it might be wise to pick something highly controversial for the first debate, to get as much interest as possible. Abortion and gun control would be two that come to mind as unendingly controversial on ce&p. And to make sure all the ground rules are worked out in advance. Mainly to make sure audience questions don't become audience debate.

I think there's potential in this idea, I just think it might look like people aren't interested because there isn't much to get invested in yet. When I said the approach might be wrong, what I mainly had in mind was my concern that this idea might end up dead in the water because it seems like people aren't that enthusiastic right now, when they will become enthusiastic once it starts happening. Basically the concern that it might fail keeping it from being attempted.

I mean, even if I'm wrong and people really don't get that interested in an actual debate, that's no great loss. I'd still say it was worth trying.
