The telly host tweeted that he "never understood the drug laws" over here and added that "countries like Portugal are leading the way and results are impressive?.

In 2001 Portugal decriminalised drugs and in recent months the Norwegian parliament has indicated it will also follow its that lead.

Lineker, 56, was responding to a tweet from Labour's David Lammy, MP for Tottenham, who posted a video interview with a drug dealer.

The MP posted the following message with the video: "This is the reality of what kids as young as 12 are up against every day.

"But it is the serious gangsters running drugs and guns across borders who sit much further up the chain insulated from the violence being carried out on our streets."

To be fair, that was a career as a government adviser. Those in entertainment fields are a lot less apt to be punished for voicing an opinion like this.
 
Good point, definitely a career ending move for an appointed official. TV personalities have a lot more liberty.
