Medicinal cannabis in Australia

Coming from LA where it is so simple to shop for weed, it seems like it's impossible to get in Australia. I know that it CAN be prescribed by certain doctors but they are discreet and not easy to find. I would have no issue buying it without prescription but it's not really polite to go up to strangers and ask if they can hook me up, I'm too old for that.
Any suggestions or solutions would be very much appreciated
