Anybody know of any sleeping pills that are actually effective? Ive tried so many otc meds and they dont seem to work but i dont know if im shooting for too much.

I feel like sleeping pills should be like codeine in the 120mg range ha, anyways im going too the docs too see if i can get something but if i go in with some names i might stand a better (or worse) chance.

P.S: mainly no sleep due to anxiety etc even after a hard days work and hard exercise ha :)

The antihistamines never worked for me either. I like temazepam, although any benzo should help if sleep issues due to anxiety. Its best not to take any pill everyday for sleep.

I havent found any otc sleep aids effective personally.

Ive had success with halcion, seroquel, xanax and other benzos but never been prescribed them for sleep specifically.

Mirtazapine works well and has for me and was prescribed that for depression and anxiety.

Anxiety-->no sleep---->depression--->anxiety is the theory.

It does help sleep but didnt help with anxiety personally.

Rohypnol at larger doses seems to work for me. Mirtazapine will leave me hangover kind of effect for the next morning and also it will make RLS way worse for people having that problem.

Unfortunately, it's kind of a big leap in terms of pharmaceuticals. On one hand, you have relatively weak OTC medications like sedating antihistamines or melatonin, while the next step up are fairly potent sedatives like Benzodiazepines and Z-Drugs. These are obviously super effective for sleep, but what's the game plan? Use Benzodiazepines to sleep every night for the rest of your life? I ain't patronizing you man, but it's something you must consider. There are many people who cannot sleep without powerful sedatives.

What I would say, is that if you can get a script for something like a Z-Drug, only use it on occasions when sleep is especially elusive for you. Using them every night is not advisable.

I'm sure you've been around the block, but I got this stuff at Costco made by Schiff [sic] that contains Melatonin, Valerian, Chamomille and some other good stuff. I'm a former Heroin addict, and I can say that this is a pretty effective combination for sleep. Definitely superior over Melatonin. I would recommend investigating either this med specifically or some of the herbs that I've mentioned.

I dont know if it will help but Ive had sleep issues due to anxiety myself. Most nights I take melatonin and a valerian root/passion flower combo. I take that just about every night and I usually sleep pretty decent. I usually wake up a few times each night but I go back to sleep fairly easily.

On occasion if I wake up in the middle of the night and am having trouble going back to sleep - I'll take 50mg Benadryl. That works pretty well.

I also have Restoril for when Im really struggling. But I try and not take it often at all. It works very well but I only take it usually twice a month at most.

I've used Atarax also and that works pretty good for sleep. But same as Benadryl and Restoril...Ive only taken Atarax once in a great while. I dont know how it would be taking on a more regular basis.

For me I have to do a ton of little things that all add up to good sleep. Exercise, not looking at any type of screen for 1 or 2 hours before sleep, meditate to clear my mind, hot shower and a lot of strecthing and maybe a little kava. I have tried so many sleeping pills in the end they just made sleep worse. This is just my experience. I still struggle with getting a good night sleep even with all these techniques :/

Thanks for all the feedback! :) think ill try to get a script and give that a go.

Awesome as always guys! Feel free to close ;).

If you're going through a sleepless period and under a lot of stress a short s ript of valium can help get to sleep but not really stay asleep. Ambien used to help but I wouldnt yse that anymore as I sleepwalk.

If youre never sleeping well tou should see a sleep specialist as you could have breathing issues ie apnea or allergies which close up your throat. Try nasonex.

Mersyndol is okay but just doxylamine succinate for calmness.
