Study on Narcotics in animals?

I recall reading many years ago that one of the earliest experiments that noted the existence of the blood brain barrier was a man who injected dogs with a dye, killed them, cut their head off, and noted that the brain was one of the only things not stained by the die. Supposedly he often killed dogs or other animals in his experiments, to the extreme distress of his daughter (might have been his wife).

It's definitely true that the discovery of the blood brain barrier was made by noting that dyes only stained the brain of the test animals when injected directly into the brain or spinal fluid. The rest of the story I've never been able to confirm since I first read it. But the last couple posts made me think of it.
