Full implementation of legal cannabis could be delayed beyond July 1

The full implementation of legal cannabis could occur later than July 1, government officials told CBC News Tuesday.

While the Liberal government is still hoping its legislation will pass Parliament before July - even though it faces entrenched opposition from some Conservative senators - it recognizes it may take some provinces 8 to 12 weeks of further work after the law passes before consumers can purchase legal, recreational marijuana from storefronts.

Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, during an appearance before a committee of the whole inside the Senate Tuesday, said she has heard from lower levels of government that more time might be required.

"As a practical matter - they told us they need 8 to 12 weeks following royal assent for preparatory activities to occur, such as lawful movement of product from license producers to distribution and retail outlets."

"Before legislation comes into force and Canadians can legally buy cannabis, Health Canada continues to engage national and community partners to share information related to implementation and ensure all levels of government our prepared for the prospective coming into force of bill," she said.

Senate deal on cannabis bill timeline means no sales before August

Leaders in the Senate have reached a deal on a timeline for the legalization of cannabis — a schedule that pushes the start of retail sales past July 1, the date that has been floated in the past as the government's target.

Peter Harder, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's point-man in the Senate, and Larry Smith, the Conservative leader in the upper house, have agreed on a path forward for Bill C-45, CBC News has confirmed.

While Harder had wanted a vote at third reading in May — the last legislative stage before a bill receives royal assent — that vote will now be held on or before June 7.

Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor told members of the Red Chamber last week that it will take 8 to 12 weeks to get the retail system up and running after the legislation receives royal assent. That means Canadians probably can't expect to buy legal weed before early August.

"There's no exact date but, if you do the math, you'll see it won't be July 2018," Petitpas Taylor told reporters Thursday. "Cannabis legalization is not about a date, it's about a process ... We want this process done as seamlessly as possible."

It IS about a date, because you twits touted a date for some time now. Get your shit together and keep your word, or expect some serious backlash.

Fuck the status quo, and fuck the war on (certain politically-incorrect) drugs.

Even with it getting passed I can't see him getting elected again, what with all his massive blunders and detrimental attempts at vote-pandering. Don't know how much of an impact this really has on us Canadians since there are already so many shops set up selling cannabis that don't even ask for a greencard (at least in Ontario).

The Liberty party of Canada lied.... say it ain't so lol

You can just feel the industry strings tugging....

The whole thing is absurd. They pump out pharmaceutical drugs with no long-term testing every year yet they can't just legalize a plant that was already legal before. They act like it's this huge problem. Such a joke.

You will know its passed when those shops get shut down. Ontario wants to restrict pot sales to government liquor stores. Last time I checked anyway.
