Hi everyone: I have BPD2 and I think that's why hydrocodone has me bouncing off the walls. I rarely take it, but I'm about to have surgery, will be in serious pain AND stuck in bed. The last thing I want is to have energy and not be able to do anything. Doctor suggested oxycodone, but it seems I would have the same reaction from another "codone"..... (Idk, seems logical?) From reading this forum in the past, seems the posters here know more than the doctors as far as pharmaceuticals go. Also, to be honest, I've never felt Vicodin or fentanyl patches did any more for my pain than Advil. I just had so much energy, I didn't care. I've tried googling this, but to no avail. So to recap, anyone know of a pill I can be prescribed that actually kills pain and does NOT give me energy? Something that would work with BPD?
(Current meds: 20mg viibryd, 50mg Lamotragine, 2mg Xanax)
Thank you!

Like you, opiate painkillers did not do much for pain after surgery. I ended up taking extra strength over the counter drugs for pain after a very serious abdominal surgery (with a large incision) and they worked fine. Maybe if you are in a weed-legal state that may be an option as well? Although, a warning here is important: people with bipolar have very different experiences with marijuana--for some it is mania inducing and intolerable and for others it helps to calm mania so I would not suggest it if you do not have previous experience with it.

I hope you find solutions and find something that works well for you. I suffer with bipolar 2 myself and I know the struggle. The last thing you need is more problems on top of others. I had surgery a year and a half ago and I was in so much pain that if I moved, a shot of pain would go through my entire body and I had surgery on my cervix. Just talk to your doctor and try to figure something that will work out with you. Anytime I'm put on painkillers, for some reason I end up feeling miserable, depressed and lazy. Thankfully I only needed them for a short time. :) Everyone reacts differently to different things. Hope you get well soon!! :)

Hi Gig,

Ask your surgeon to refer you to a pain specialist (usually an anesthesiologist) before your surgery that you can consult with and decide on what might be the best option(s) for you given your BP 2 disorder and your past history with pain medications.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar NOS.

I was in a ward after an attempt and something was said to me by a student nurse. You're not bi polar, you simply have bi polar disorder. I was diagnosed at 11 and at 23, I have been through it all (27 now). That made me realize I don't and never define myself as a manic depressive, just a person who has to fight a little harder in life. That may not make sense to many of you, but it helped me from self from harming, using, etc.

I thought I was damaged because I believed 'I am simply a depressed paradox.' You're not. You just suffer from a condition, a condition that is sometimes controllable if you push through it.

I am on 4mg of Clonazepam, 400mg of Lamicatal, 1200mg of Lithium, 140mg of Vyvanse (switching back to something different). I use to be on heavier medications (Zyprexa for example) along with 6 mg of clonazepam. I am not that hippy that says medication is terrible and that dieting and yoga is the only way out.

I am trying to express that you aren't your diagnosis. By finding the right 'cocktail' and pushing myself, eating better, taking care of myself, CBT, diet, yoga, etc. I have been able to date. I actually have had multiple relationships. I rarely fake it through the day. Its difficult explaining to your gf that youre sad and happy. The problem with being Bi polar Not otherwise specified, I can be manic or depressive for weeks.
