Trump's Counselor Kellyanne Conway Is Now Leading His Opioid Strategy

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday announced that pollster Kellyanne Conway, 50, counselor to President Donald Trump, would oversee White House efforts to combat the opioid overdose epidemic.

More than 64,000 people died in the US of drug overdoses in 2016, largely from opioids such as heroin, fentanyl, and prescription painkillers. Trump declared a national public health emergency over the crisis in October, and calls have emerged for an opioids "czar" to lead crisis response efforts in the last year.

Looks like Conway has the job. Trump has asked her "to coordinate and lead the effort from the White House," Sessions said at a news conference in remarks that went beyond prepared ones from the event.

"It is a positive sign. She is a high-profile figure in the administration, showing the administration takes this seriously," opioid policy expert Andrew Kolodny of Brandeis University told BuzzFeed News.

But Kolodny noted the administration still hasn't named someone to head its Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), or released a strategy to combat the crisis (one is promised in February), or requested any money from Congress to fill the depleted national public health emergency fund — now down to $66,000 — to pay for its health emergency declaration.

Is she fucking qualified? All she seems to know how to do is deflect questions and talk in circles.

Yeah, if someone possess an ability to deflect questions and speak in circles, they're qualified to handle all sorts of shit apparently..

That's why nothing ever gets solved.

I have and why I question her being tasked with this. Is it really that hard to find someone with some training in medicine or pharmacology or addiction? Trump, whether I like it or not, is the goddamn president. For once it would be nice if he goes outside his little circle and finds someone who knows what the hell they are doing.

Any solution that gives as much (or more) money to the DEA as it does local public health actors is just more of the same thing...

What a joke! Our government can't even discuss treating this as public health issue without emphasizing the (by now totally debunked) public safety "aspect."

I would doubt it would be difficult at all to find someone perfectly qualified for the job, had Trump, Sessions, etc. actually been interested in assigning anyone who fit the bill instead of an individual sure to further their agenda of ensuring that the U.S. and it's stance on illicit drug use is in full retrograde. How long before the country begins executing minor drug offenders? Assuming the drugs can be procured of course.

Well at first it was going to be Jared in charge of things. I guess this is what you would call a lateral move between two equally unqualified people.

He should have el Chapo round up the initiative...ramp up production of.good clean product and get rid.of the fent.

I don't see "Dr" in front of Conway's name I didn't know she was so qualified to advise on such a serious medical and social issue on an enormous scale..but she is prob alright with using Google and.wiki haha

I’m amazed at how a lot of folks don’t really understand how to use either google or wikis. Alas I don’t have high expectations.

Go figure 8)

I doubt anyone truly qualified would want to fill the position. He has not had much luck attracting talent.

I get the feeling having to tell trump something he doesn't want to hear is extremely unpleasant. So you may be right.
